Hardware transcoding seems to be working a lot better on the QNAP. CPU load has dropped from 90% down to about 30% whilst transcoding to 2 devices and also playing a local stream.
too bad it is only enabled for this version and not for the latest one

Yes for sure, I was a bit wary about downgrading but it still seems to offer everything I need and the hardware transcoding doesn’t half take some load off my NAS.
I don’t think it’s a bad idea to limit the pilot to version 1.4.0. I fully support this decision. Let’s not forget that the feature is not generally available, so far 1.4.0 had two versions, and I’m sure that if/when Plex team thinks that the pilot is based on a too old PMS version they will certainly produce a pilot with a more recent PMS version.
For the time being this feature is not publicly available, participation is voluntary, this gives the team time to react to the various suggestions received, all in a controllable way. I am not the kind of person that wants to have it tomorrow. I only want that when it’s made available it has most errors solved, and it’s a usable piece of code (that, by the way, it is already within certain limits)
I have TS-451 and I just updated to “4.3.3.0154 build 20170413”; which seems like the final version for QNap, I also installed “PlexMediaServer_1.5.5.3634-995f1dead_x86_64” but I can’t seem to find the hardware encoding option under transcoding advanced settings. What am I missing here??

Edit: you all so have to be running version 4.3.3 of qnap firmware
Thanks for the reply. I have a PlexPass member and currently running Plex 1.5.5.3634. And I have TS-451 running “4.3.3 Build 13/Arp/2017”. That’s why I was expecting to see the option

The only version with hardware transcode is the preview version 1.4.0.3224 posted in mentioned thread. No other version has hw transcoding enabled for now.

that made sense, I thought hardware transcoding is supported from version 1.4 and up forward. I guess I’ll wait for the next release with hardware support. Thanks for the info
hi
I have been very happily using 1.4.0.3224 on TS-453, and its great encoding MKV files to view on my appleTV. Do we know if this functionality has made into the official releases? It looks pretty stable to me…

Is there an open beta for non plex pass users?
Not at this time.
Only hardware transcoding version that’s open to non-Plex Pass users is the one for WD Pro Series PR2100/PR4100 models.
thx.
Well thats a shame. I just wanted to test the hardware acceleration feature and perhaps contribute back any of my findings.
If i subscribe for a single month would i be able to participate using the beta HW/accelerated plex version. As well as subsequent versions once the monthly subscription ends?
If your computer or NAS has an Intel processor which is capable of Quick Sync, you will be able to use hardware acceleration. HW transcoding does not work with graphics cards at this time.
For some CPUs, like those found in NAS units, it has been observed to reduce the CPU load from 80+% to 3-4% load.
I now got my Plex-Pass
As i Understand it will be an option under transcoder.
I’m running the current betaversion 1.9.0.4252 on my Qnap TS-253A but i cant find the option.
What am i missing?
