QNAP vs Synology - GPU Support

Given the new models that have come out from both manufacturers recently will they have gpu transcoding support in Plex?

To add to Trumpy,

  1. J3xxx (J3455 in particular) is fully HEVC 2160p UHD capable where the J3355 does not provide the “UHD” capability.

  2. The new J4xxx CPUs in QNAP products still have some “settling” issues which we’re working with QNAP to resolve. They provided a test unit for us . It just arrived two days ago. Testing and investigation will begin this week.

I was specifically referring to GPU support via an add on pcie GPU card.

Please do qualify such requests in the future? It saves the “back & forth” like this.

  1. QNAP already supports Nvidia GPU card – PROVIDED:
    a. The card is supported for transcoding by the Nvidia driver package they provide
    b. QTS allows the card to be selected in “QTS mode” (QTS apps can access the card). This is important because not all models allow this capability. Some only permit GPU cards to be allocated to VMs or Containers.

  2. Synology is unknown.

Hi,
So for a PlexPass user with certain models of QNAP NAS with Nvidia PCIe graphics card installed, does Plex already support hardware assisted transcoding using the graphics card in a NAS? If yes, which precise NAS/GPU models is this known to work ok with?
M

We don’t keep track of particular Vendor’s compatibility / sub-feature capability.
Keeping track of, and testing, basic models for Plex compatibility is sizable task unto itself.

In the case of QNAP, if you search specifying the desired model name, you’ll quickly find out if anyone has tried it.

Have you reviewed the NAS Compatibility Guide?

As for particular models, QNAP is very good about providing GPU card compatibility.

Hi thanks
I did have a look at

What I wasn’t clear about was if the GPGPU only gave hardware assistance with the QNAP app, or if Plex used GPGPU for hardware assist

what’s important with QNAP,

  • QNAP must make the GPU available in “QTS mode”
  • It can’t be dedicated to a VM or Container

When the drivers are loaded from their app center, and the card is in QTS mode, the Plex startup script will find it and link in everything Plex needs to use it.

Thanks ChuckPa

Nice and clear that GPGPU hardware assist does work with Plex on QNAP and it’s dependencies to get it working

:+1: (it helps that I’m the engineer who added that support )

If you can read shell scripting, you’ll see it in plex.sh.

Well, it’ll be your fault then  Or credit
I couldn’t find that script plex.sh [maybe as I’m running (v1.19.3) on Synology DS716+ ?]
find ‘/volume1/@appstore/Plex Media Server/’ ‘/var/packages/Plex Media Server/’ -name *sh
