QNAP TS-453B Random Restarts

Definitely time to call QNAP.

This is beyond anything we can do here.

Please do not take what I say next as implying you should buy different ram or as if this is the problem. Just sharing my experience and some of what I found out researching a similar issue as noted above.

I went through several crucial ram kits, 1866, 1600 1-8, 2-4s and nothing worked well until I bought the actual QNAP ram from QNAP, for my TS-453Be. Also note the user manual actually makes a specific statement that the unit should use QNAP ram. I know most all vendors say that. I also know in my case it actually is what fixed my random reboot issues.

That would make sense except the unit worked for close to 6 months on these sticks. So if it was a compatibility issue it would have started right away. I’ve put the stock 2GB back in and I am going to force some transcodes and see what happens.

Mine worked for almost a year with the non QNAP ram. When they did the firmware upgrade past 4.3.1 the random reboots became a plague and got worse as the firmware continued to be upgraded, lasted about a year before things settled down. You can see the beginning of this in the thread I am linking, you will need a QNAP account to see it.

Again I am NOT saying this is your issue at all, just passing info along.

No doubt appreciate the feedback. Will read and try everything I can of course. For what it’s worth I’m playing 4 1080p transcodes and 1 4k HDR file at the moment on the stock 2GB dimm and so far it’s not crashed. Which does appear to point to the memory theory.

@ChuckPa I reverted back to 2 x 2GB of QNAP original memory that came with the device. I was fine for a few weeks, but have now crashed twice in the last week with the same error. Once on 1.21.3.4021 and once on 1.21.2.3943 as I didn’t seem to have issues with it and thought it may have been the update.

Exact same issue here, TS-453Be.

Had this problem with the 4.4.2.1270 previously and it stopped after reinstalling that same version, unfortunately no luck with this firmware update.

The NAS ran smoothly for several months… so its a challenging issue.

Technical info :
QNAP TS-453Be with 4.5.2.1594 build 20210302
PLEX **1.22.0.4163

RAM:
Crucial DDR3L 1866 1.35v CL13 8GB (Kit 2x4GB)
CT2K51264BF186DJ
Crashes about every week

ADATA DDR3L 1866 1.35v CL13 4GB (Kit 2x 2GB) (Original QNAP RAM)
ADDS186622G13-BSSE
Crashes about every 2 to 5 days

ADATA DDR3L 1866 1.35v CL13 2GB (Original QNAP RAM)
ADDS186622G13-BSSE
No crashes after 3 days, but can’t run all my service

SAMSUNG DDR3L 1600 CL11 4GB
M471B5173EB0-YKO
Testing, currently

KINGSTON DDR3L 1600 CL11 4GB
KVR16LS11/4
Ordered

Crucial DDR3L 1600 CL11 8GB (Kit 2x 4GB)
CT2KIT51264BF160B
Ordered

The other weird thing is that NAS seems more stabIe when Plex services is stopped i.c.m. with 2 modules, when using one module i have not yet experienced any problems yet.

Update:
I’m now in the process of testing the Samsung module.

I suspect a problem with dual channel support on the unit, this because a single 2GB and 4GB did not result in any crashes so far.

It’s a nightmare isn’t it @Jonathan-458. That’s interesting you mention the single memory - please keep me updated on how it goes!

Did you raise a ticket with QNAP support? The more of us that do it, the more likely they are to try to resolve the issue.

This reminds me, @ChuckPa, you mentioned earlier in the post that it’s ā€œDefinitely time to call QNAP.ā€ - did you get anywhere with this?

Thanks

@DonCaliOni,
Hi i just adjusted my post so it makes more sense.

I raised a ticked previously and they wanted me to use the original 2G gig ram, however the problem was solved bij reinstalling the same firmware version at that time. so the unit ran smoothly for over 8 months.

Also figured out that both Crucial and Kingston no longer have 1866Mhz kits listed as compatible with this unit and only the 1600Mhz memory and only Crucial listed a kit as supported. so i’m also looking in to that.

Currently i opened a new ticket and they have yet to reply.

There are several threads here and on the QNAP forums, QNAPs FW ever since 4.3.6 is SUPER sensitive to RAM issues. I had to buy 2 sticks directly from QNAP to get my TS-453Be to work properly with 8 gig of RAM.

Random restarts WAS one of the common issues from RAM problems

@skwor01
That is pretty weird, however the RAM in almost all cases is completely fine and crashes do not seem to occur when using a Single module or Installed in slots that are not supporting ā€œDual Channelā€ mode.

It was also fixed for me after reinstalling 4.4.1 and has not come back since 4.5.x

I didn’t mean for this to be an action item assigned to myself.
I did state it’s beyond what I can do here in the forums.

In all the cases I’ve seen where QNAP systems reboot randomly, it’s always been a RAM hardware configuration issue, e.g. 1x8GB is not the same as 2x 4GB DIMMs (as per QNAP spec).

Ah, my bad @ChuckPa.

So I used the original QNAP RAM that came with my unit (2x2GB) and still had the same rebooting issue…

@DonCaliOni

That is the confirmation you need to contact QNAP.

I say this because when an application causes the Kernel (QTS) to panic / reboot, there is problem at the OS/HW level.

Linux will ā€œcrashā€ a badly behaving application before allowing itself to be compromised.

My very first TVS-1282 i7 machine had a problem. I would start the transcoder and the machine hung then did a full restart (All the lights went RED).

QNAP saw it happen (logged in at the time) and gathered the post mortem data.

A week later, I had a new machine.

Okey, an update.

I finally received both ordered modules, non of the single ram modules gave me any issue’s at all.

I’m currently running the Crucial 8GB Kit (2x4GB) CT51264BF160B for about 1 weeks now on 4.5.2.1594, not a single incident yet.

I also contacted Crucial and they say that although CT2K51264BF186DJ worked fine and shows no error’s it was not extensively tested for this series of QNAP NAS systems and they recommend sticking with the 1600Mhz kit.

After extensively testing the ADATA kit it found an error in one of the modules, a replacement is on its way.

I’m now updating the system to 4.5.3.1652 and will keep you updated.

So are you indicating you think RAM was the issue in your problem?

Well it doesn’t seem to be a Plex specific problem. just got triggered because of RAM usage, after running several VM’s i could replicate the same random reboot behavior.

So it must be a RAM issue of some sort, but it still remains to be a weird issue. the CT2K51264BF186DJ worked with out issue’s for several months. And running any single module seems to be completely fine. The NAS seems to get more specific when using Dual Channel memory modules after 4.3.x.

Ill report back in when it happens again or after a month or so, and start testing the new Adata in DC mode.

New update after about a month of use, the Random shutdown happened again.

According to QNAP PLEX is too blame, i requested more technical details, cause i’m confused on how this app can cause a kernel panic event that causes the nas to reboot.

They have asked me to downgrade to the version on their repository, so guess thats next. ill try and get the logs & technical details first.

@ChuckPa,
QNAP send me back some readable diagnostic data from the unit which, how can i share this with PLEX or You?
