what do you mean “Manually” ?

There is nothing you should be doing other than:

  1. Create a PlexData share on any volume in your NAS
  2. Grant FileStation access permission to any appropriate usernames.
  3. Restart Plex.

Please show me what you created?

@ChuckPa Oh, interesting. I think we may be talking about two different instances of PlexData.

  1. I SSH into my TS-453be.
  2. cd /share
  3. ls -l to find symlink PlexData -> ta

This is the PlexData that I changed manually before.

  1. rm PlexData
  2. ln -s /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server PlexData

This is the symlink that reverted back to ta when I checked it again.

When I went to check on this just now, I found the PlexData folder that I believe you are talking about at /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/PlexData. This one contains a symlink Plex Media Server -> /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server.

What is that first PlexData symlink and why does it keep getting created?

  1. QNAP uses /share as a common directory for all shared folders.
  2. You should see /share/PlexData
  3. If the shared folder was not damaged, and everything pointing correctly, It will look like this:

To make everything correct again, It looks like you need to:

  1. Stop Plex.
  2. Remove the PlexData share. (Control Panel - Shared Folders) . Delete the content also.
  3. Create the PlexData share again fresh. Assign permissions as you do.
  4. Start Plex.
  5. Open File Station
  6. Navigate to DataVol1 -> PlexData
  7. You will see Plex Media Server

@ChuckPa I followed your directions and corrected the PlexData shared folder. I did not experience a crash after playing music, which was encouraging.

So I created a new music library today and started adding music to it. And just now had 2 crashes in a row (around 3:45pm and around 4:30pm). The second one occurred as I was doing a file system check after the first one happened.

I did not see the NetworkInterface flapping issue you noticed in the last set of logs, but please let me know if you do see something related to that. I’m attaching the logs zip file here. Thank you for your help in continuing to troubleshoot this.

This is starting to become disturbing.

  1. I first found the network adapters flipflopping around.
  2. Now, the last thing in your logs before/as it crashes is PMS searching the LAN for devices (periodic)

This makes for two incidents of network-related activity.

Do you have the QNAP Diagnostic Tool installed? If not, would you please install it?
The likelihood of a QTS problem here grows with each incident.

Please run all the tests.

Hopefully the Diagnostic tool will provide more insight.

Thanks @ChuckPa. I agree, it is disturbing! From what I understand, the standalone QNAP Diagnostic Tool was deprecated, is the correct? I do have the one available in the Helpdesk app. The options there are:

  • Download Logs
  • HDD Standby Test
  • HDD Stress Test

What do you recommend?

Get in touch with QNAP and tell them what we found.
Although it’s rare, you might have a motherboard problem with the ethernet adapter.
They can best assess that.

As for diagnostics, with everything stopped, run the HDD and memory tests.

@ChuckPa After a number of back-and-forths, QNAP support was not able to find anything wrong with the hardware or anything notable in the logs. I ran Memtest86+ overnight and it completed 4 passes with no errors. Over the last several days, I have added and watched video content on PMS, used various apps hosted in Docker containers, and have experienced no crashes or problems of any kind.

The crashes seem to be specific to PMS music libraries. Please advise.

@ChuckPa I experienced my first crash since earlier in the week. I did add a folder to the music library, whether or not it is related. I’ve been combing through the previous logs and have started seeing a bit of a pattern. Crashes often happen around when PMS is doing a “loudness analysis” on various albums:

These are the entries immediately before the system crashes. This latest one is interesting, with the error that occurred right before. Are those requests to get album information? This last time I hadn’t done a music library scan before adding the music folder, in fear of experiencing another crash (which happened anyway).

Yes, That pattern is familliar.

Suspecting it was performing loudness analysis and crashed is very interesting.
There was a case reported, and reproduced by engineering, just last week.

They see it crash but have not yet figured out why.

Might you be able to isolate which file(s) is/are causing it?

If you can,

  1. you can pull it out for now.
  2. Get a replacement
  3. Forward the damaged one to me so I can forward to engineering (important)

@ChuckPa Any update on debugging the loudness analysis?

I decided to completely uninstall and re-install Plex to see if that could resolve some of the issues and rebuilding the libraries, etc. However, I am still experiencing crashes when the loudness analysis begins running:
