QNAP TS-653A NAS or Nvidia Shield for Server?

Planning an initial setup of Plex. Trying to decide between QNAP TS-653A NAS or Nvidia Shield as the Plex Server. The QNAP has a Celeron N3150 with 4GB RAM.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Anyone?

Unless you get Plexpass, ShieldTV since you get HW transcoding free… But there are things to be aware of as well on ShieldTV.

You did say initial!.
In that case go with the qnap.

U can always buy a shield later.

FYI. I have ran a plex server on 3 different shield versions, multiple pc’s and celeron,i3,i5 and i7 NUCs, 3x synology NAS and 2 x qnap NAS.
A ts-1277 is my current plex server.
So i do have some experience

I actually own both the QNAP and the Shield already. Would you still say the QNAP is preferable?

That depends on how many streams and remote users.

You can tell us.
There is no reason u cannot run both at the same time.

Probably not more than 2 streams at any given time.

Hi,
I own a TS-453Be and the 2017 Nvidia Shield version.
I don’t need transcoding, nor do I stream to more than two devices at the same time.
There’s also the problem with the limited space available on the Shield (the Pro version is 500Gb, but not the 2017).
I do stream to TVs that are in different rooms, and only one is connected with the Shield.
Given so, I put my Plex server on the NAS. Any other device is running as client.

500gb verion of the shield is plenty for PLex.

Maybe if you are creating video thumbnails 500 is not enough.
If u have the 16gb you can use a 128gb microSD or USB3 drive…
I have 40,000 tv episodes and 4,000 movies and my PMS is about 100gb !
