Hi, just a quick question that I had a quick peek at on the forums but couldn’t find the answer.
How comes the remote stream quality limiter on the server states: 2mb (480p) and runs a res of 716x300
Yet the option you’re given whilst watching a film on the player states 2mb (720p) and runs a res of 1280 x 536
Limiting the connection on server side gives a far worse quality than if i were to remotely select 2mb on my player.
Surely this isn’t right.
Both settings you are referring to are client settings. There is no setting on the server side. The correct value should be 2MB (720p). The 2 MB (480p) you are seeing is possibly a bug in the local Plex Web that came with 1.2.2. Update your server to the latest version and see if the quality now matches.
I just started using the bandwidth limiter and have found strange results. I tried some rudimentary bandwidth testing of my WAN port and found that the setting ex 3 MB/s (server side) ended up with with a bandwidth usage on the router of under 1Mbps and made the resolution unwatchable. My client side was set to Original. To get to a decent resolution, I had to set the server bandwidth limit to 4Mbps. Note that my ISP upload speed is around 11.5Mbps.
To see how my remote users would perceive the bandwidth limitation, I left the setting at 4Mbps. Prior to doing this change, I have asked all of my remote users to set their bandwidth to 2Mbps and for the most part have had no viewing issues. So one would think that my setting the value higher than the client would result in no worse resolution than what they currently have. Within 2 days, I received a call asking why the movies are so crappy. At the time I got the call, there were 2 remote users. Once I turned the bandwidth limitation off, movie resolution was back to previous state.
Keep in mind that the bandwidth limit is a first come first serve and not bandwidth sharing. So if you have a limit of 4 and user 1 starts streaming at 3, that only leaves 1 left for all other users, so they will get low resolution streams regardless what their setting is. It’s been requested that the limit be changed to a per user limit, but that isn’t a feature now.
Did not realize that. I thought it was a per user limit. With that being how it works, not sure if it will be of much value to me. My issue is more of wanting to keep each person to a value.

If I go into server settings > remote access > Limit remote stream bitrate, the 2mbps option is 480p.
This is running on server version 1.3.3.3148
Web browser version 2.12.6
As a client, the option is still 2mbps 720p
And this runs as a better resolution compared to limiting to the same value (2mbps) via “Limit remote stream bitrate”
As you can see by following the thread some, this was a request for PER USER limits and not a general server limit for all streams. Not that there is a request for this limit to be CHANGED to a per user. It’s that we WANT a per user limit. What we got is a general limit, and all connections must share this over-all setting for the whole server. We were told when we got this, that it was a first pass, and that there would be updates to this to support per user limits. I suppose this feature could be considered complete, if you read just the first post of the Request. But I think if it were closed there would be a huge uproar on the forums for people that support the per user idea.
Gotta love the mis-information, though…
Other streaming suites have per user limits already, so we know it can be done… It’s just a question about implementation now.
