Question about remote access and it forcing transcode

Server Version#: Version 1.19.4.2935
Player Version#: 1.13.0.1275-bbd8d37b

So If I access my server remotely even on a fully capable PC or laptop, the stream always defaults to transcode, even when original quality is selected, if I disable video stream it refuses to play. Transcoding has artficating on animes and stuff so I would like direct play to happen when possible. This is on a WD NAS device.

Is there a way for it to not transcode if the device the user is using outside the network of the media server is capable of playing it natively.

If the client is set to play the video in original / maximum quality… the only reasons I can think of that will cause the server to transcode are:

  1. insufficient network bandwidth (most often that translates to “your server upload speed”) or remote streaming restrictions (check your remote access server settings)
  2. some combination of formats/codecs the client cannot deal with natively.

Was thinking it may be that. I actually have a 1gbps uplaod and download connection due by the end of the year, shoudl solve the problem hopefully. Although it looks like it might be doing it for 720p streams, and my upload is 17mbps currently should be more than fine for that.

If I play on the network its direct, so I doubht it’s the codecs/formats in that scenario.

Update: Another 1080p video same format plays withotu transcodign but is only 3mbps. So must be upload speed, thanks

Update 2: Got a h.264 file, mks, 8160kbps file, with ac3 5.1 its transcoding to 12 mbps… Although If I remember correctly, the amount of data increass when streame dright, so maybe my uplaod is not coping. Tautulli is reporting that its transcoding mp4 to mkv, and 1080p h264 to h264 1080p which seems odd
