Hi all,
I have been searching and couldn’t find an answer about this. I have plex pass and have two servers set up (one in FL with a NAS and one in MA on a PC). I am planning to purchase a HDHomeRun to stream local MA sports games to FL. Does anyone have experience hooking up a HDHomeRun and streaming it outside of your home network? Does it matter if I buy a connect duo or a quatro when it comes to Plex quality streamed to a different network?
Also, can you use Plex to DVR shows from a tuner that’s on the same account but on a different network?
Either of the Connect devices should give you the exact same quality when streamed. However, I would suggest considering the Extend instead. The Extend can handle transcoding the Live TV from mpeg2, which US OTA broadcasts use, to h264 before sending the stream to Plex to forward to you while in FL. If you find the Live TV stream is buffering often you can change the transcode Plex requests from the Extend from the Plex Live TV & DVR Settings for the device.
As johnm_ColaSC pointed out, best to get the extend since it can natively convert the stream from Mpeg2 to MP4 saving WAN bandwidth.
You would need to have a layer 2 VPN from the remote source to your local server unless you can get a real world IP address from your remote ISP (I don’t know if DMZ or port forwarding will work using NAT). I can confirm that the VPN does work, but takes a bit of networking experience to get the routing, and configurations just right.
Also currently Plex doesn’t support dual EPGs currently so to have multiple tuners, you will have to run XMLTV and map channels that way.
Awesome, thanks for the replies! Will plan to pick up an Extend in that case. I think there was a black friday sale, hopefully they drop the price for cyber monday too!
