Queue music by album release date

When I navigate to an artist in my music library using Plex on my Roku I can add all the albums by that artist to the play queue but they are added in some random order. For example I have four album’s by the Rave-Ups. Plex shows them in this order:

  • Chance (1990)
  • A Chance Conversation with Jimmer Podrasky of the Rave-Ups (1990)
  • Book of Your Regrets (1988)
  • Town & Country (1985)

When I click the play button they are added to the play queue in the following order:

  • Book of Your Regrets
  • Chance
  • A Chance Conversation …
  • Town & Country

I have no idea what order that is. Perhaps the order they were added to the Plex database?

I would like either a setting or an additional play button that would allow me to add them to the queue ordered by release date, starting with the oldest. So the order would be:

  • Town & Country (1985)
  • Book of Your Regrets (1988)
  • A Chance Conversation … (1990)
  • Chance (1990)

(The last two are sorted alphabetically since they have the same release date, but if the had more precise dates they would be sorted by them.)

I think this is the same problem I reported a while ago:

In whatever order an artist’s albums are set to display, when playing all that artist’s tracks, they should play ordered by Album (in currently set order) then Disc then Track Number. So if albums are sorted by date, then the albums are played in chronological and each album’s tracks in proper track order. But…

Although this works in the Web app, it does not in the Apple TV app. So we have a lack of consistency between platforms and I suspect it is this problem from which the OP is suffering.

This is not an issue due to some peculiar individual desire, as the only sensible way to do this is to follow the users sort settings. There are already options to shuffle playback order, so this is already catered for, hence a user controlled sort order is the only order that makes sense for non shuffled playback. Besides which, the inconsistency between platforms is a clear sign there’s an error.

Unfortunately there seems to be no way to report such bugs. Just post here on the forums and hope for the best. But as we know, this can be very ineffective.

Plex on the Apple TV is great and I use it all the time, except for Music as this bug makes it unusable for what I want - to just play a chosen artist’s tracks in a basically chronological order.

So would be good to get some response on this from Plex people.
