Quiet Audio in Playback

When using OpenPHT to playback DD content, it seems to be significantly quieter than when played through VLC or WMP. Passthrough is enabled.

I just replaced my old AV Receiver with a new Yamaha A760. The old Pioneer receiver it replaced supported DD & DTS via passthrough as well, but used TOSLink (optical) instead of HDMI like the new one. Didn’t have any volume issues with OpenPHT & the old receiver. Previously it was configured for Optimized output 2.0 Channels, with Passthrough ticked for both, and you’d see the surrounds light up on the display when DD/DTS content played.

With the new AV unit, OpenPHT set to 5.1 Channels, Optimized, and Passthrough enabled. However the sound is much quieter. I have to nearly max out a more powerful amp to get adequate volume. Bear in mind that simply playing the exact same content though a different player (e.g. WMP), without changing any settings the volume is very much in the expected range. This happens across multiple video files.

I have made sure the volume is turned all the way up to 0.0 in OpenPHT, and I’m not sure what other settings are available to restore the sound volume. I’m on the latest 1.7.1 pre-release channel version.

Also keep in mind that normal windows GUI sounds are at the expected volume level and it’s the OpenPHT application that is running very quiet relative to everything else. The volume bar is maxed out in the volume mixer, and you can see the sound output from the app in the mixer is just minimal when the sound should be booming.

Windows i assume, is the correct audio device set as default and that audio device is set to max volume in windows?

is the audio device set to the correct amount of speakers in windows?

if windows is only set to 50% volume and openpht is at 100%, you will still only get half volume

I went back and check the audio device. It was set to DirectSound: HDMI, I changed it to WASAPI: HDMI and the sound immediately jumped up in volume. However, It’s still much quieter compared to PMP even. Watching the same scene from the same episode, the bass is thundering and the orchestra sounds like it’s behind my couch in PMP; in OpenPHT it just sounds a lot flatter and not as powerful.

Just to be clear, I’ve checked like 8 times, all volume settings in windows and in the app are set to max, and it’s only the OP app that is quieter.

New PMP app is just awful by the way. Huge step back compared to OpenPHT or even earlier builds of itself.

i was talking about the correct windows audio device if it was set as default - (not the one in openpht)

you didnt answer about the speakers in windows if it had been set to the correct amount or not?

Ok, I finally got it. Didn’t see there was a separate passthough device selection. Was set to directsound, I switched it WASAPI and the volume/power is where it should be now.

As I said before, the problem wasn’t a setting in windows, as other apps played back fine. It was a setting in OpenPHT that I was missing. Didn’t realize Directsound/WASAPI made such a difference.

It doesn’t make that kind of difference, something will still be incorrectly setup or configured - but atleast your happy with your solution using WASAPI

For whatever reason simply swapping in WASAPI for DS does have a dramatic effect on the volume in my setup with OpenPHT. As in -20db on the amp with WS vs -8db to get similar volume, but flatter sound with DS selected. It’s easily reproducible; switching it back quiets the audio. Using any other app the audio is fine. Seems silly to argue about it when I’m looking right at what fixed it. Don’t really understand your reluctance here. I’m not going to upload a youtube video to prove my point though so believe whatever you want. Regardless, thanks for taking the time to respond, even if it didn’t help.

you misunderstand me, i understand that fixed it for you and i have no doubt what you were saying about the volume was happening, what i was saying there should not be such a big difference in audio volume switching from directsound to WASAPI output in general and something is likely still not right with your directsound setup

i can switch my htpc from directsound to wasapi with my receiver or vise versa and i wouldnt notice what you described for example for DD content.

anyway, as long as your happy with the solution, case closed.
