R730xd + vmware + GPU

I have bought a R730 with 2x8core cpu and 128gb memory. 2x10gbit nic
16x4tb disk with raid h730p controller with 2ssd cache..
What i also want is a GPU to put into this one for hardware transcoding..

Planning to have all my material in 4k, and some clients sometimes need to transcode.
So thats why im planning to install a GPU and make passtrou to the vm that is running plex

Anyone who have tried something like this before and have any GPU suggestions?
there are lots of tesla cards on ebay that i can buy but i cant realy use those?

?

i have a vmware/esx box that runs a couple of servers and one of them is a plex. I have a gtx geforce 710b that allows for 2 transcode streams. I had to do extra work on getting the pass through to work correctly as if i rebooted the plex server it would reboot the whole host. Had to change the power signs on it. It looks like you have a little extra money in your setup than i do. I would make sure the gpu you go with is esx support. NVIDIA can only do transcode in one direction. Good luck, with your setup.

I’ve read that Intel QuickSync needs to be able to transcode movies. Also that there may be problems in Linux?

I have also read that you can remove the restriction on limitation 2 stream.

But can i buy and use a nvidia tesla card or should i go for something else?

sorry, i don’t have experience with intel quicksync. i have no issue running on linux.
https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix for information on the nvidia gpu family. here is some additional info with ffmpeg
https://developer.nvidia.com/ffmpeg
https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/
remember on linux nvidia is only able to encode not decode

as long as i run windows i can both decode and encode with nvidia video card?

Have decided to buy:
PNY Quadro P2000 5GB

My CPUs are:
16 CPUs x Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz

Will this work?

Can confirm that this will work without any problems.
