While watching movies, I started experiencing random audio dropouts that are accompanied by video problems such as picture tearing, a large blotch of color, loss of sync and stutter. The problem usually clears itself after a second or two and the stream resumes fine. The problem seems to be worse during the first 10 to 30 minutes of watching a title; it gets less frequent the more I watch of the movie and often is not present in the second half or last third of the movie.
This started happening a couple months ago.
I haven’t changed any Plex settings.
Video was ripped using MakeMKV. Video was encoded using Handbrake 1.2.1 to MP4 files, H264. Ripping and encoding take place on a MacBook Pro Retina, mid 2014 running macOS Mojave 10.14.6.
The local mkv and m4v files on my MacBook play fine using VLC Player.
The mkv and m4v files play fine streaming via WiF from the Synology NAS to VLC Player on my MacBook. In both cases, there are no audio dropouts or video problems.
The problem is not reproducible - the dropouts seem to occur randomly in the stream.
I have 45 MB of log files available.

Hi. I ripped and encoded a new DVD, “Frenzy,” a Hitchcock thriller. Playback on my Roku Ultra box is now heavily pixelated at the point at which I start or restart the movie. The pixelation eventually goes away (several minutes). The previous issue of audio stutter and video tearing is not evident.
Playback of the mkv and m4v files on my MacBook Pro using VLC is perfect. I’m able to play the content from the Synology server to my MacBook Pro just fine (both file types, mkv and m4v). The content streams from the Synology server to the Plex app on my iPad just fine.
So the problem seems to be related to (and limited to) Plex playing on the Roku Ultra box. I just updated the Roku Ultra software from 9.1.0.4919 to 9.2.0.4115, but no change.
I’m sending you the zipped log files via private mail.
Trumpy…I cannot find any way to attach a file to my post. It must be painfully obvious and staring me in the face, but I don’t see it. What am I missing? Do I need to turn on a file attachment authorization somewhere? Does a moderator need to grant me that privilege?
I found a post on a SolidWorks forum that says “…you have to be in the Discussion itself. You can’t attach files when replying to a Discussion from your Inbox”. So I logged off the Forum, logged back in, searched for my post and now I see the upload file icon. That is a weird UI.
I’m uploading the XML data for the “Frenzy” content.Frenzy XML.txt (7.7 KB)
