For me the big advantages of Rasplex are the ability to playback almost anything without transcoding and, more important, 24Hz output.
From a navigation point of view, the interface can be a bit slow at times, but I can live with that.
Since you have a spare one around, I recommend you try. Personally, my ATV2 is in my second house where I go to occasionally (jailbroken with Plex client), while the ATV3 is currently a piece of furniture. I haven't had the time yet to try Plexconnect but I plan to do so soon. However, the lack of 24p is a showstopper..
I don't know about RasPlex (which is built on OpenElec), but vanilla OpenElec is supposed to be dramatically improved by using a USB drive for the storage partition, I've only ever run mine with a USB drive so not sure how it compares, but in general I find it remarkably snappy (although I am coming from plex on my 2010 samsung TV which is slooow), I just run OpenElec(XBMC) with plexbmc installed to connect to my PMS.
I flashed a SD Card with the latest build of RasPlex (0.3.1). After running the standard Openelec wizard at startup (wifi pass/ ssh etc) It booted straight into PHT but was unable to see my PMS,
I played around with the settings and the only thing that worked was to manually setting my server ip under network settings after that it saw my PMS. I have had it running for a few days now
as my primary Plex Client and has been stable and hasn't stuttered or caused any issues at all. In answer to my original question the menu navigation is not as zippy as on my ATV3 (running PlexConnect)
but it is a more feature rich setup. I wonder if a rPI specific stripped down version of the skin (no background fanart etc) would speed up the menu navigation and bring it inline with the Zippiness of PlexConnect?

Anyone else found ways of improving the setup?
Cheers Rob.
You should run your RasPlex install from a fast USB drive. That will help speed up the interface and general performance. There are details on how to achieve this in here.
I'd also look into overclocking the Pi which should also help.

Hello Ynnoj,
Thanks for the advice.
I will grab a fast USB 3.0 Drive and take it for a spin, I'm not to keen on overclocking the Pi, I have found my Pi to be quite unstable under Openelec even with quite mild overclock settings
