Raspberry Pi

according to Tony Hoyle you will need a decent CPU instead.. is this correct?

You need something capable of running PMS. That’s not really Pi specific. The CPU comment was more about the Pi itself and why you wouldn’t want to run a server on it.

Ok, but is it that pi is comparable with other “normal” computers ?

I guess for mpeg4/h.264 there is no need for transcoding. I don't know this is also cover DTS/AC3. On comment section of blog post, people discus about sales of separate mpeg 2 licenses and foundation says "maybe.

Raspberry team wants to use Fedora as OS. Is it possible to build a Client for this OS/Platform ?

I too am extremely interested in this! Would love to get this set up as a plex client - like a CHEAP apple TV!

Would it be possible to have Plex Media Server and Plex Media Center both installed on the Raspberry Pi, just so you can use it as a standalone media center ? For playing 1080p Video, without transcoding them ?

theoretically for encodings supported by raspberry pi

I’m very interested to have a client only - like the one the android device! I will make a very good HTPC!!!

Does the “ARM” architecture can be a problem?

The $35 version launched this morning and promptly sold out, LOL. Can’t wait to see where this goes and if Plex is viable on it…

The Plex team would have to rebuild, recompile the whole server for ARM so to put it simply : NO

But even if I ( and most ) don't have the necessary skills, it *should* be quite easy to build from scratch a very simple frontend for ARM / Fedora ( an iOS Client clone for the R-Pi if you want )

Ordered mine today - 30 day wait for me.

Come on Plex dev team, get the client ready by then

I really want a small box that can play 720p/1080p mkv’s from my pms. I have the roku 2 but find it very slow. I’m hoping a client on a raspberry pi would be much better?? If plex packaged a box capable of doing this like the boxee box, I’d buy it!

That would be great and with supply model set up, quite feasable?

My company would certainly be interested in being the uk distributor for the Rasberry Plex ;)

Any more news on this?

Would LOVE to see a Plex Client running on the Raspberry PI!

The Raspberry Pi only supports MPEG-4 ASP (XviD) and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) videos in hardware decode, the CPU is a low end Arm device capable of handling some standard definition videos, basically it’s similar enough to the AppleTV2 or Roku 2 XS (similar chip actually) though might be faster in operation than those two with a highly tuned OS.

The only person building such an OS for it is Sam Nazarko the guy behind Raspbmc for XBMC (he did Crystalbuntu for AppleTV prior) and I highly doubt he is a fan of Plex but… if someone else was working on a Plex client for the R-Pi and asked Sam nicely (and/or donated to Raspbmc project) I think he might consider including it as part of the OS, as at one point he tried to include Boxee on Crystalbuntu but it wasn’t do-able.

That would be the quickest and best path to getting Plex on the R-Pi.

Not going that route means someone cooking up up a Plex client for their own custom OS or trying to run under other general purpose OS which could negate any speed advantages.

Looking forward to updates about this. Today I registered to be in line for a unit.

I got my raspberry last friday.

Openelec is running it… but i really would like to have plex on it.

I’m really psyched for this device and have one on order, but I don’t see the appeal for using it as a Plex client. In it’s current form, it is a circuit board with all your wires (HDMI, power, usb) sticking out of all sides of the unit. Even when it starts shipping with a case it isn’t exactly something I’d want sitting in my media center, or even next to the TV in the bedroom. When you figure you’ll have to pick up something to power it, a USB cable, and a keyboard or remote to control it, you’d be better off buying a Roku LT for $50. I know the Rpi can do a heck of a lot more than a Roku (or a GoogleTV or an AppleTV, etc), but strictly in terms of being a Plex client I think there are better options available.

Just my 2 cents. Not trying to rip the Rpi because, as I mentioned I’m really excited for it and have a number of projects planned for it. I just don’t see it as an ideal Plex client. That said I’d probably take it out for a spin if it’s ever released.

Can the Roku decode 1080p?
