The LT I listed and the HD are limited to 720p, but the XD and XS can do 1080p. I’ve seen the XS going for $88 on a regular basis at Sam’s Club. Not that much more than a Pi if you figure in the extra stuff you need to connect it to a TV and control it. That said, cost of entry with the Pi is lower if you already have that stuff laying around.
I think that's it - at least at the moment, people who are likely to use this as a media centre have the stuff lying around.
It's also going to be in the hands of lots of education establishments - so is going to be pretty widespread hardware
Hi,
I am really interested in getting something like the Pi or the Roku as a media client so I can have it constantly connected to my TV and stream my Plex content to it. Now I know that Plex can’t be used on the Pi at the moment and I didn’t even realise the Roku thing was out there lol. But with the Roku kit can you get Plex working on it at all?
Now the most promising mini pc that’s available imo is the Via Technologies APC or the Rikomagic MK802 as these run the Android OS and thus I would assume run a Plex client with no problems? Although they can’t connect to the Google Play store so is there a Plex APK I could download to run on one of these android devices?
i’ve got 10 of these on order to mess around with!
whoopie!!
My order was just submitted. Hopefully I’ll get one before the estimated delivery time in mid August
just submitted my order too. Looking forward!
Hey all,
New to the forums! Been running a plex server on my synology nas box for a while now and love it. Now the proud owner of an Rpi… mad keen to try get some kind of plex client running.
Can anyone suggest anything to try?
Cheers,
JT
When I get mine, I plan to install raspBMC and then try to work out DLNA or run PleXBMC. The XBMC Quartz skin runs well on my ATV2, so I imagine I’ll run that skin.
sounds awesome! ill have to look into this.
I can confirm that raspBMC and PleXBMC with the Quartz skin work well together, haven’t had too much time to test it out though. I tried OpenELEC too but it felt a little slower to me.
Got mine today!
They are currently building an Android image for it. Prehaps it can run the Plex client?
What I’ve been doing with PlayOn is taking the playlist file the Android App generates, and using Remote to VLC to play that on an old busted Laptop. If we could get a similar system running between Plex and the Pi, especially since Plex is a little more… finicky when it comes to video then PlayOn, we might have something pretty neat running.
Any updates on Plex and R-Pi? This could be a real winner.
Having had a while to play with this now what are your thoughts? Just ordered my pi so interested to see how you have got on - how do you control it on the TV for instance? A wireless mouse?
I use my Panasonic TV remote :D
read up on HDMI-CEC!
:) no way my old tv remote would work with hdmi! but thanks for the pointer...i think initially the iphone app should sort out any control issues i have.
We’ve been working on a gui-less plex client (written in python) over in this thread: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/35906-raspberry-pi/page__st__120
You can control it with the web interface (for PlexPass subscribers at the moment) or an IOS device.
It does work at the moment, and there’s heavy development going on recently to get it to support more things.
It's all going well, raspbmc has impoved a lot and it plays 720p flawlessly, plays 1080 too as long as you don't skip or try to use the menus. To control it I have a usb ir receiver and a harmony but you could use hdmi cec or a smartphone or usb mouse / keyboard works great too.
I have a spare pi sitting about so I may try out this gui-less solution.
As others have done before, I too confirm that the ‘Raspberry Pi’ works fine with RaspBMC using the PlexBMC add-on to access my Plex Media Server (running on a Win7 PC).
But there are definite limitations to what the tiny RPi computer can handle, especially when it comes to high bit-rate media.
Unfortunately that’s only true for some 720p and 1080p material. It depends very much on the encoded bit-rate.
Of course the PMS server can transcode to a lower bit-rate, suitable for the RPi capabilities, but that always lowers the quality.
Such transcoding loss is acceptable when viewing a video on a mobile device over remote networks, but not so much when viewing a movie or TV show on a large-screen TV set and streamed over a high-speed LAN. For such use I really don’t find the RPi to be a very good choice, as it frequently crashes when trying to play high bit-rate videos (using RaspBMC without the add-on, to eliminate transcoding).
Since the RPi has two USB ports, it may also be controlled by any normal USB keyboard and/or mouse.
I often use an RF-connected miniature keyboard with an integrated touch-pad, altogether just a little larger than the palm of my hand.
