Rasplex 0.5.1 on Pi v2 Weird HDMI audio noise issue

But some new stuff has come to light..

I get the aforementioned crummy audio when connected to my Vizio TV... Figured I'd try it on my main setup (which connects through my home theater receiver), and audio is clean and nice, and appears to actually be in surround.

What would cause crummy audio on one device and perfectly-fine audio on another with the same install?  I've tried multiple cables... maybe I should try another one?

Is there some magical setting I'm missing that would make it more universally acceptable to all devices?

Since the problem is specific to using your Vizio TV, that is most likely where the cause of the problem lies.

So not in any configuration or other aspect of RasPlex, though obviously the audio settings of RasPlex may trigger different responses in the TV.

Thus it may help to find an optimum combination of settings in RasPlex, to avoid or minimize the TV set's buggy treatment of the audio stream.

What I would do in your place is first to search through the menu system of the Vizio TV, to find all settings related to HDMI audio.

Then I'd note all the original settings (for possible restoration) and start to experiment to find some combination that works better with RasPlex.

I would also check if any other of your HDMI devices give better results with that Vizio TV than RasPlex does, and for such cases I would note what settings they use, to see if these correspond to any available settings of RasPlex.

dlanor -  Thanks for the reply.

One thing I forgot to mention (not sure if it's important) is also that the boot logo was always garbled on the Vizio --but not when connected to the receiver.  I did try changing the config_hdmi_boost option, but that made no difference.

I also tried booting connected to a computer monitor via a HDMI-to-DVI adapter, and could only get the occasional flicker of an image on the screen.  I have another TV I can test, and will try to do that tonight or tomorrow.

Things I've tried:

  • Multiple combinations of power-supplies and cables.  All @ 2A or above.
  • Switching HDMI ports on the TV
  • Different HDMI cables
  • Adjusting audio options on the TV (there aren't many)
  • Adjusting audio output options in rasplex (number of channels, analog out, AC3, DTS, etc.)
  • Restarting / rebooting / resetting / hard-resetting
  • Disabling CEC

To close this up:  It appears that I had a bad HDMI cable (could have sworn that I swapped that out more than once.. ) as it's now connected to the TV and sound works as it should.

The boot logo is still messed up (only on that TV) though...
