Rasplex 1.0.1/2 Crashing during mode/nav changes. Especially after long screensaver/suspend periods.

I continue to report the issues to github here: https://github.com/RasPlex/RasPlex/issues/468

Anyone else having these issues? I’d really like to hear if you have or have not had the problems as I’m trying to figure out if the issue is software or hardware related.

My users and myself have been having crashes happen occasionally (a few times a week) and I’ve always thought they were Black Edition Skin related. But now I’m using the default skin with 1.0.2 and this pattern seems to be emerging. My users also report crashes happening sometimes when a video ends and it tries to return to the menu.

Since my users and myself all use the same hardware I put together, I’m curious to know if anyone else is experiencing this or if it might be a hardware issue related to power supplies or SDcards we’re using. Most of us use AERB WiFi Keyboard Remotes and USB WiFi adapter so I thought it might be a power draw issue related to that. However, two of my users do not have USB WiFi and are hard lined yet still experiencing the issue.

[Power Supply]
Brand Name: Vilros AC Adapter
Model: XHY050200L UCH
Input: AC 100-240v~ 50/60Hz 0.5A MAX
Output: 5.0V 2.0A

[SD Card]
Sandisk Ultra 8GB MicroSDHC I (class 10)

Strange you are still having issues, personally I have a number of RPi’s running 24/7 locally and two remotely that my family use, all with Plex Black Edition Skin, without this issue.

Can you try a different power supply, although I have looked at the Vilros one and it looks OK, and recommended for the RPi.

How did you install Rasplex on each card, separate install for each or ‘cloning’, issue with cloning is that if there is a slight corruption of the card when it’s cloned it will pass that on.

Suggest also refreshing one card with latest 1.0.3 using GetRasplex and see if the issue is still there.

Regards

Thanks for the reply. The cards are not cloned as I had problems with that once upon a time where unique identifiers would kick cloned devices off of the server.

I just installed 1.0.3 with the latest Black Edition V16.03.01 fresh from GetRasplex. Testing it out now to see if the problems return.

I just took a dump trying to play a video after suspend mode just now. Crashid 3566.

That’s were I’m at as well. I’m wondering it it’s related to the USB devices consuming too power. I’ve pulled the Panda USB WiFi NIC and swapped the powersupply to a Belkin 5v 2.1a. Left the WiFi keyboard remote attached but we’ll see what happens.

That sounds nice … :))

Check the temperature around the USB ports, if it is really hot then it might indicate that the device is drawing too much current.

There are some USB pass through devices that will display voltage and current draw on the USB port if you really want to check it out further, but a NIC and power supply change will hopefully show some differences.

Whoops! Sorry, didn’t mean to put words in your mouth there.

I’m leaning pretty hard towards the powersupplies being the problem. I’m getting the low power rainbow square using the Belkin adapter, but only when these nav/menu changes happen and at the beginning and end of playback. But not during playback which is exactly the conditions where I’ve been having the crashes.

I’m thinking maybe the Vilros adapter is right on the edge of the power needs and occasionally the PI’s draw are pulling just over the maximum it can output in a spike condition.

I’ve ordered a new Canakit 5v 2.5a adapter to see if that will cover the problems. What adapters are you kids using that’s fulfilling all your power needs?

@trumpy81
Thanks for the equipment list. I’m hoping I won’t need to replace these WiFi remotes with a new lower powered IR solution.

Interestingly, I haven’t had a single crash since I switched to the Belkin, even though the PI is reporting low power when using the remote.

So using the Canakit 5v 2.5a I’ve only had a single crash I’ve chalked up to a one off issue. I’ve seen it freeze up during a search once but no reboot. Think the issue has been solved by the increase in power rate. Thanks @trumpy81 @NedtheNerd
