Hi guys, i run a server in my home for my computers around the house and my smart TV downstairs. My brother who doesn't live with me has access to my server and watches it on his Ipad. My dad has an LG smart TV so no plex app. Today he bought a pi and i went round and installed rasplex on it, it works fine and accesses my server/streams fine, however you can't fast forward through anything and none of the remotes work. Does it require a server on the local network to be able to use any of the plex remotes (android etc). As he doesn't have a server and just connects to mine over the internet.
Also can anybody tell me why when i installed rasplex to a 32GB class 10 SD card it formatted the card to around 200mb ? :/
A little addition as there is no point me creating another thread.
I was planning on buying my sister a pi and installed rasplex so she can watch stuff from her house too, however if none of the android remotes work she would need a separate remote which just looks messy, surely there must be a way to control rasplex with android/IOS without having a server on the same network ?
To do what exactly scott, fairly new to all of this. I'm pretty sure i used to be able to play stuff from my android phone on my samsung TV too but now i don't see the tv in the " play on " menu of the plex app.
I can see my server address in there, do you reckon if i put that in the server address for the remote at my dads then i'l be able to use his android tablet as a remote ?
Think i've misunderstood that tbh. All i want to do is to be for him to use his ipad/ipad mini/android tab as a remote. I think in the plex app you're supposed to be able to find something to watch and press and hold it and click " play on " but it doesn't work, even the normal plex remote app doesn't work as it just asks for server address which i assume has to be on the same network as the client.
Same goes for the sister, i want her to be able to access my server but control her rasplex via her android phone (plex remote)
it's just an idea... a way to get the devices on the same 'extended' network. though you are correct that to test the idea you may need to purchase plex for your phone.
i do not know plex remote, does it have a myplex login somewhere ?
From what I remember I don't think that the PlexHT control requires a server. I'll check tonight but I have an ipad and iphone and I thought that they controlled the Rasplex without issues.
I have had a high amount of spousal acceptance with using a FLIRC plugged into the Pi and our normal Harmony remote, it is a little expensive at £25 on Amazon but I think well worth it.
I have plex for andoid yet even when its on the same network the remote part of it doesn't work with the rasplex. I wouldn't of thought you needed a server on the network to be able to control it surely ? I have the official plex app and the plex remote app, neither of which work on the rasplex at my dads house.

This is probably related to your network setup (as already mentioned several times in the forums). Please just ensure mulicast is working via WiFi to allow auto configuration. (Just search the forums for multicast to get some more info)
It's nothing to do with wifi, the rasplex is plugged into LAN at my dads house. My point is that he shouldn't need a server on his LAN to be able to control clients on his own LAN. I was actually thinking about buying a plexpass so i can manage my server better but if something as simple as controlling a rasplex client can't be sorted i don't have much faith in the project at all which is a little upsetting as we use plex everywhere now.
When i had the rasplex at my house i could control it via the plex remote as i have a server on my network, but it seems because he doesn't have a server on his LAN he can't control his clients which makes 0 sense at all.
It would seem there are a few people on the forum with the same issue, so its obviously rasplex related surely ? Are the forums the best place to get support or the facebook page ? There is no point me biting the bullet and paying for lifetime plexpass if something as simple as a remote control can't be fixed. Its something to do with not having a PMS on that LAN, but it shouldn't need it as with the remote you don't control the server, you control the client...
1 Simple question : Do you need a PMS on the same network as the client to be able to control the client with an android/IOS remote ? If the answer is no you do not need a server on the same network, then something is wrong.
After a bit of research it turns out that the plex remote apps send the commands to the plex server, which at the moment can only be on the local network. The XBMC remote app works as it sends the commands direct to the client and doesn't require a server.
With a server on the same LAN the remote works, however both the IOS app and the android plex app when you click " play on rasplex" it says its playing but does nothing. I imagine thats a rasplex issue ?
The "xbmcremote" app for iphone works really well with my Rasplex
How did you get the xbmcremote app to control your rasplex? Does it automatically detect it? Do you have to set it up manually? If so, what do you use as the port, username, password, etc...?
With some xbmc remote, like Yatse on Android, after automatic detection, it wasn't working.
I just set the event port on 9778 instead of 9777 (default), and it worked ;)
Btw, if you're using an Android device, Yatse is definitely the best app to control your pi, 'cause some features are broke on officiel Plex android app, which aren't on Yatse.
After it autodetected, it found my pi was at ip 192.168.0.111 and the port was 3005. After I changed the EventServer port to 9778 the remote began working for to navigate (i.e.- up, down, back) when I was using yatse.
I tried to replicate this in the official xbmc remote and failed. (Perhaps I need to reset and try again.)
However I am not able to see a listing of tv shows or movies in either app. It merely says "No Media".
Are you guys able to get more functionality than this? I think this would solve modd1uk's problem if so.
Much thanks.
Edit: Just to clarify I mean the ability to see a listing of movies in the app and click one of the movies and have it start on rasplex. Is this possible outside of the local network to the plex server?

Did you ever find a fix for this? I just swapped over to Rasplex and your suggestion to port 9778 helped me get the remote to work, however as you stated the listings aren't showing in the app. Would love to know if you found a solution. Thanks.
