Plex doesn't allow remote control for Rasplex over Wifi (no problem over ethernet)

Hi all,

Last saturday i received my Raspberry Pi. I ordered it so i can use plex on the bedroom TV without the need of connecting my laptop to it.

First impression of Rasplex:

It plays all my files great! Navigation is still a bit slow. But when i browse through my files on the plex app on my phone, and select to play them on the Pi, it works great!

I'm looking forward to the updates and the RasPlex case!

The problem:

When i moved from my test-setup in the living room to the bedroom, i tried to connect trough wifi in stead of ethernet and after a reboot it worked great. There was a connection to my Plex Media Server, and playing files was fine using a keyboard for navigation. But when i tried to use the remote control build in to the plex phone application, the Pi wasn't in the list of Players. After i reconnected a ethernet cable, it reappeared.

I suppose the list of available Plex Players is generated by the Plex media server, but since i'm able to play content over wifi with my Pi, i don't understand why PMS doesn't find the Pi as a player.

I hope someone has a solution to my problem, as i was hoping to use RasPlex over wifi with my phone as an remote control.

Some details that might help:

- Raspberry Pi v2 512mb

- linksys wusb54gc wifi adapter

- phone: Galaxy Nexus running android 4.2.2

- Plex on phone: v2.5.4.3

- Plex media server: v0.9.7.12

Edit:

In this topic (post #4), it seems that someone is experiencing the same problem with a Plex media player on windows7 and an android phone. It makes me think that my problem might not be RasPlex related...

Are you using multiple subnets?

The Plex app only allows to remote plex clients on the same subnet.

Try using a XBMC remote app which will talk directly to the client and will work even across subnets.

The DHCP server in my router is providing every device an ip-adres within the same subnet.

Ip adresses:

PMS pc: 192.168.2.2

Pi over ethernet: 192.168.2.6

Pi over wifi: 192.168.2.7

When i get home i'll try the XBMC remote app to see if it works.

I'd really like to use the official Plex app, because than i have the option to pick a movie with my phone and select 'play with Pi'.

Try to check if the RasPlex is registered with your PMS: http://:32400/clients

It would be a PMS or iOS Remote issue if RasPlex is listed here.

I tried to look up the client-list, but your url gave me the folowing error:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
<MediaContainer size="0">

I did find a list of my devices on https://my.plexapp.com/devices, and there was one linux device listed (only linux device i ever used is the Pi)

I removed this device from the list, reconnected my Pi (over wifi) and it re-appears in the list. So MyPlex is seeing the Pi.

Maybe i'll have to reinstall Plex Media Server, to get the client-list working again....

I had the same thing, RasPlex would not register as a player, it was not until I upgraded to the latest version of Plex Media Server it solved the problem.

I'm now running 0.9.7.17.471 which does not have a problem.

(and I had the issue over ethernet, not wifi).

This is definitely a PMS related issue. The RPi should be listed here (if it's on the same subnet). Try upgrading / restarting your PMS.

I updated the PMS to the latest version and rebooted the pc, still no succes.

i'll re-install PMS this weekend, hopefully that solves the problem!

You should check the PMS and RasPlex logfiles prior to reinstalling your PMS - maybe you'll find the problem.

(RasPlex logfile is at /storage/.plexht/temp/plexhometheater.log)

One more hint: Your should check your routers multicast settings, since this seems to be related to your Wifi. Some routers will not allow multicast over Wifi or will rate-limit the multicast traffic.

99% of the time this issues are router related.

I would like to jump back to the original query that started this thread. I also, can control my RasPlex with a keyboard, but I cannot get the Plex Remote on my iPad 2 running iOS 6.1.2 to do anything at all.  You know how it works, when you select Players, it sees both the iPad and the plexhometheatre on Pi and when you select the plexhometheatre option, the icon for the remote appears to the left, but, alas, apart from offering the promise of control, I get zilch.

To get the remote to work, I guess there may be multiple places, where multiple settings need to be turned off or on. For example, do I need bluetooth for the remote to work, do I need airplay to be working, does the remote just work over http?

Whatever it needs, is there a guide on the necessary settings, because, I fear, I am missing something really basic, due to the fact that I am getting Zilch.

My problem was fixed by replacing the router. So I believe that te problem was indeed router-related, just as Tobias Hieta suggested.

i got the same problem here,

changed already the router (fritz!box 7240) and my server is up to date.

If i start a Windows or Mac Client it gets listed in the clients list, the rasplex server is not.

Just got a Raspberry Pi and RasPlex. Had the same issue where I could not control the RasPlex but could control Plex running on my desktop. It was a router issue. My DLink did not have IPv4 multicast enabled. IPv6 was.

Hi all,

Been using Plex for two years now (and I absolutely LOVE it!). Thanks to all the guys behind this.

I only just installed Rasplex on my rpi, and again, I love it ! But I am having the same problem, ie I am unable to control Plex via the iPhone app. The only thing is I have reason to believe this isn't router related, but rather a problem with the iOs app, since I can perfectly control the Rasplex with xbmcRemote (free in app store) with the "controller" function (videos and tvshows tabs don't work).

Could others try this and confirm I am not the only one to have Plex's remote not work but xbmc one does ?

That's because the xbmc remote doesn't need your Plex player to be recognized by the PMS. It just simply sends the http-commands directly to your rasplex!

The plex Remote works fine with RasPlex at my house:-)

I seem to have the same Problem. Just got my 2nd Pi which is not available via Plex Remote. My first Pi works fine.

I can see the 2nd Pi via Airplay, so it is there, I can play content and everything, just not Remote it via the Plex Remote.

I use the newest PlexPass Server 0.9.8. and tested my 2nd Pi with every release of RasPlex from 0.1.35 to 0.1.38 which is running at the moment.

When I unplug my 1st Pi, I can sometimes see the 2nd Pi (don´t know when or how, after a bunch of restarting).

Could there maybe be an adressing issue, that the Pi´s can not be differentiated by the Server or something like that?

I am also having similar problems. The pi is not visible on the iOS app over wifi. It is over Ethernet. Over Ethernet I can try and play to it. The iOS thinks it is working but it is not. I also cannot use the iOS to remote control. The controls do nothing. I cannot use any other xbmc remote control app to cotrol it either.

Try to check if the RasPlex is registered with your PMS: http://:32400/clients

This returns a blank page.

I have also enabled wireless multicast forwarding on my Billion 7800n

Any ideas please?

As already mentioned: This is almost 100% Router related if this is a Wifi-only issue.

You should recheck your multicast settings again and try a different access point if possible.
