Recently added randomly decides that old movies are new

Same here. Plz fix it

Same here
what’s more annoying is that it chooses a different poster than I had set.

Why is this thread marked as answered? Does Plex know about this issue?

Just dropping in to say same as well. Only I think it’s getting worse over time.

Same problem here
Expect next release will resolve this bug

The only time I’ve seen this happen to me is when Plex Server does its nightly library scan looking for new / changed things but for some reason my NAS does something stupid or something else happens where Plex Server can’t see my content during the scan (network share offline) so it marks a bunch of stuff as deleted / trashed. If I didn’t notice that this happened and I go and Empty Trash before the next nightly scan happens, all of those items get removed from my library. Then the next time a library scan happens, Plex Server finds all these “new” things (new to it at this point since they were purged from the library when I Emptied Trash), so those items get added back to the library as new and show up as such.

Things I’ve done to try and prevent this from happening:

  1. Disable the “Empty trash automatically after every scan” option under Settings -> Library
  2. Wrote a script on my NAS to notify me if my NAS might have flaked out during the nightly scan. That way I can double check a few things before manually emptying the trash if I’m doing library clean up.
  3. Do a quick scan of the library looking for the Trashcan icons over any of my content that I know should not be deleted before manually emptying the trash.

Doing the above things for me has kept old stuff from showing up as new unless I have a brain fart and didn’t do #2 and/or #3 above before emptying the trash manually.

New feature request wise:

  • I’d like to see a link I can click on in the webUI that would display a list of all the items that Plex Server has in it’s trashcan, like the “Recycle Bin” in Windows. That would be a quick way for me to see if there are things marked as deleted that shouldn’t be before I empty the trash.
  • A “are you sure you want to do this” pop-up box that shows how many items will be deleted if you empty the trash manually. That way if I know I only delete 2 items but it show there are 100, I know something is wrong and I can fix things before emptying the trash.
  • Also maybe a setting that puts a threshold on the “Empty trash automatically after every scan” option. Basically if there are over X items in the trashcan don’t auto empty the trash.

Your #1 generally works around this issue, since the “deleted” items still play properly. The underlying issue though, is how the Shield handles network drives. Somewhere on this forum someone did a very nice investigative testing process, and found that for whatever reason when the Shield looks at network drives, it first indexes the drive’s contents, then accesses the contents. During that index it seems to frequently not index all items, which causes them to not be visible to apps or file browsers, but still accessible if you know their direct path (such as a movie that was already mapped in PMS). In other words, this is a Shield-based issue, and the folks at Plex really can’t do anything to resolve it, its totally on Nvidia.

That’s super helpful to know, thank you!

I think because anyone responding to this post marks it answered?

I am having the same issue but I am not using shield as my PMS. It is running on a Windows 10 Host and the media is sitting on a Synology NAS. I will try setting the trash not to empty after each scan to see if that helps or not.

Same problem with OSX PMS (1.2.2.2857 Plex Pass) with UNRAID 6.2 NAS (mounted using AFP). One interesting finding for me is music or movies with ‘e accented’ in file name are being tripped by this possible bug. I have disabled Empty Trash after every scan to check. I have been running PlexPy which has highlighted how this problem happens with every scan. I feel this may have been introduced with a recent build.

Same issue here with Plex on Shield and using a NAS for storage.
It would be great if Plex would at least acknowledge this thread

Please look at my post / comment about 6 or 7 from yours if you haven’t already.

This may not be a “bug” per se. It may just be a side-affect of having a certain option enabled with possible storage / NAS blips while scanning for new content and the PLEX Server just doing what it’s told.

I have disabled the automatic empty trash but the problem still persist

Did the file(s) of the videos that show up as new again for your get moved to a new directory or renamed before they show up as new again? Did you make any changes to your Library such as setting a different agent or what now before it happens?

Please provide more details of your setup.

If you’re mounting a SMB share / NAS and that’s where your files lives that PLEX Server is accessing then you might be running into the random folders / files disappearing and reappearing problem when new files/folders are added or removed from a directory issue with the SMB mounting code. If you’re manually emptying the trash while a file goes missing due to this SMB issue than that video will eventually show back up as new when you add or remove files later.

All I can say is for me, I haven’t had this problem since turning off the auto delete trash option and making sure nothing is in the trash that shouldn’t be in there before I manually empty it.

I looked through the old movie folder nothing no file is created or modified newly. I have synology nas that contains the plex library connected to nvidia using the wizard under settings-storage.
Last setting change was turning off the empty trash option and i didnt manually empty the trash.

How many movies do you have in this NAS mounted folder and how many does the Shield TV say its found in that folder?

In that particular movie folder its just 1 movie 2 srt files and on the nas root folder of the movies library 349 movies

This issue is caused by how the Shield manages indexing for SMB shared drives. It is not a Plex issue, nor is it due to a configuration setting with the SMB. The number of files in the folder is also irrelevant, as this issue affects some people with around 300 files, but doesnt affect some other people till much higher file numbers (such as myself). There is no “fix” for this that we can implement, other than a workaround in disabling the automatic delete, but even that is piss-poor. We have to wait for Nvidia to fix the issue (or Google, as it may be an OS-level issue, since Ive heard OSX users experiencing the same issue with SMB drives and Plex).

I hope someone at plex has forwarded this issue towards the devs @ Nvidia and/or Google then?
Otherwise we could wait forever
