Hello everyone! I was having this same issue as before, but I had a different issue than what has been previously discussed, so it may be worth a try to look at. I had been also having the recording failed; please check your tuner or antenna issues.
Here is my system configuration for reference:
OS: NAS4Free (XigmaNAS), installed as embedded via USB flash
Plex installed as extension thru OneButtonInstaller.
HDD: 6x 2TB Hitachi drives configured as RAIDZ1
Tuner: HDHomeRun Prime
No issues tuning directly to the Prime via HDHomeRun’s native app on android and windows. No issues tuning directly via VLC on windows.
The issue I seemed to have was installing Plex as an extension on the embedded USB flash. I suspect that the flash is unable to keep up with the IO requests dumping and reading the stream from the flash concurrently. I had to install the Plex extension to the ZFS pool for it to handle those requests without issues. Give this a try if you have run out of ideas.
Hey sorry for the delay have been really busy with work recently, which mean have not been able to play much with the recording schedule, how ever made some changes to my server, which includes no auto updating from plex of all library’s and also moving my temporary directories to a different drive, (I have temp directories for stuff I am recently adding as I run two servers 1 remotely) i have also disabled most scheduled task’s for plex and do it my self once a week when there are no recordings scheduled, and it seems to be working the only instance i have had on a failed recording was my other half fault by scheduling something too late to start recording which made the next recording failure (i think plex got its knickers in a twist so will blame the other half on that one) … if ya need any more info let me know, oh I will also disable verbose logs today. (oh i have not updated to new edition of plex yet.. (am still using Version 1.14.1.5488)
also I have had the same setup for about a few weeks so far and no issue’s at all running the server for recording (except for one), alto after about a week with having the server on all the time. My partner an I have a set up where we schedule the server to come on at least 15 mins before and turns off 15 mins after the recording (except if there are multiple recordings very close together) using Ewink smart plug to wake the server and windows schedule to make the server go to sleep (with a windows common command) as I found out plex does not wake the computer for any recordings but that’s a different subject…
Oh I nearly forgot, to all users remember to update the guide when you can in settings as this can also throw up recording failures… especially I you have set to not allow partial recordings… (sorry but I hate watching half a show I want to record)
Hey JasonM Don’t get me wrong here but I am and have been a plex user for a few years now done my research on to the TV recording and from what I see you are a plex pass user that means you have bought a plex key for the upcoming future (well they hope you have) how ever I will say don’t give up hope yet unlike most company’s that are leaning towards tv and have done for a while plex have only started with the process in the last year or two so their programming team are still learning. I know it sounds daft but if you enclose logs of what your system is failing on their team can learn from your logs before you ask no I am not part of the plex team, how ever I used to run my own website and I know how many responses some websites get especially when it is world wide, so I will say this with no offence hopefully, Calm your horses an explain what is wrong include logs where you can, as you can see from this forum there is a lot going on. Sorry If I have caused or spoke out of term in any of this message. but in stead of just ranting try asking for help 1st… (It works wonders)
I had a similar problem that was due to not using a 3 way splitter I was splitting 2 way twice. Hd homerun in the first split then split again to a TV and the hdquad in the PMS
Went to you tube and took a crash course in coaxial cable and TV signal strength.
Went back and installed a signal booster and a 3 way , ran some new line and have good signal through the house now.
I found one problem is Plex was reporting that it was up to date when really it was not. Historically it has always told me when there was a new update inside of the local server web page without having to manually check the main Plex website. After doing this and refreshing the guide again, it is recording.
At this stage, I am QUITE sure that between my own and the other folks sending logs, SOMEONE at Plex has the info they need. I’m not a software engineer, but if there isn’t a firm understanding, then I would suggest that the logs themselves need to be adjusted.
Hmmm… I even started with, “I’m just venting here…” How can I be calmer?
I fully understand the requisite of asking for help. I been around with Plex since '11.
In short, and to restate what was previously mentioned, with so many OTHER (old and new…) software packages out, that do their recording functions with oplomb, how can Plex NOT?
There are lots of different underlying issues that may give rise to this.
It will be impossible for the error message to cover all underlying causes of failures. The default is to ask users to check the tuner / its connection or the the antenna
If you have an issue please provide logs. If you are not prepared, then simply complaining will not help getting the issues addressed / looked into
There was one issue on Windows that is affecting some users and it is suspected to have come after a windows update since Microsoft introduced the same failures in July 2018 and addressed in a further update 6 days later - a similar issue appears to have started again recently - but it is only through logs that one can establish if it is this or something else
I have tested with it running and not running and so far since I turned it off I do not get errors.
After exiting and running it successfully with Malwarebytes off I tried recording with it running again. I started getting the “Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna” again.
Since the last update I have not seen any more failed recordings. Sometimes I see the same show being listed as recording twice while recording. I was wondering if this is due to a tuner failure causing the new version of Plex to switch over to the other tuner?
I was having horrible failures with tuner recording properly for quite a few versions. Since the update to 1.15.2.793, every schedule recording is now happening properly. Thank you Plex for addressing this and creating a fix for it, if not quickly…lets hope at least permanently.
Just started getting this problem again. Just in the last two weeks. Everything was working perfectly and then starting two weeks (or so) ago, recordings started failing with the error “Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna”.
Recording failings appear random: Not all recordings fail. Some work. Recordings fail and work on the same channel.
(Another problem is that when a recording fails, after about an hour, Plex removes it from its Recording Calendar View so that you don’t even realize that the recording failed. Not cool).
I created a fix with step-by-step instructions (and a drop-in replacement) to lower -probesize value that PMS sends to Plex Transcoder. YMMV but it works for me. The problem channels are now tunable/recordable.
