Server Version#: latest beta
Player Version#: irrelevant (tried multiple)
Well here we are again but this time I was able to do some troubleshooting and I am presenting my findings, hoping someone from Plex will help me.
30 minutes before a bball game was to start, I set it to record. 30 minutes (right as the recording should have started) later I got a ‘recording failed’. I tried to tune to the channel (ESPNHD) but could not. The console shows this (tried it multiple times):
while Plex is trying to tune, I can see in my HDHR status page that a tuner tuned into ESPN:
Then of course it fails and the tuner goes back to ‘not in use’. If I tune in via HDHR viewer, it is all good.
The weird thing is that Plex ‘thinks’ it is recording the show (I know it isn’t because HDHR shows no tuners are tuned in to anything).
ok I do know how this goes (I am in tech as well). But I feel like the way that this forum works does not scale for the manpower you have. The issue I am reporting has been there from day 1 of the LiveTV feature on Plex. Many people have reporting the exact same or variants of it. Folks want to know that there is a ‘point’ person for this issue and a centralized forum entry where people can contribute logs, test out theories etc. That way there isn’t a new thread every day about it (like mine, here) that gets no attention from Plex. I think there was something similar with the ‘100% stuck recordings’ issue a few months ago.
If you want to do the best you can, and better than you are doing now, there is a suggestion.
For the love of “insert deity here” would you fix this problem of tuning to a station failures? This is a PAY feature and just plain doesn’t work. You’ve had weeks to fix this.
I see you were testing with 1.14.1.5487. 1.41.1.5488 (which went to public yesterday) reverts a couple of changes that were causing duration timeouts and other issues for a number of users. We’ll be revisiting those changes in the 1.15.0 series to figure out what went wrong, but for now the best solution was to back them out. Can you try updating to that and retesting?
The client shouldn’t matter in this case, as tuning failures are almost always server-side.
I’ll dig into your logs a bit more and see if I can find anything glaring.
It’s been a problem for multiple releases, including the most recent.
For what it’s worth I’ve got 2 Hauppauge quad tuner cards. Reported this in multiple threads and was threatened with “expulsion” by a Plex employee if I reported it again.
And it’s not just a ROKU thing. Same on my ATV4K. Got really bad 2 or 3 releases of the PMS back.
thanks @timwoj. I want to reiterate that this is not an issue that started last week. This has been there from day 1 for me. Also this is one of those issues that exert max pain as imagine sitting down with your friends to watch a football game on ESPN but Plex won’t tune to the channel.
Let me know how I can help you (logs, try specific things out etc). I think if we figure this out, we can make a lot of people happy, this holiday season!
Seriously, if you just set up a Plex Server with tuners and either a current ROKU or ATV you can duplicate yourself and solve the problem. Like I said I’ve got 2 quad tuner Hauppauge cards and it looks like @tachtevrenidis has an HDHomerun.
Please don’t blame lack of log files. These are basic standard SUPPORTED configurations you should be able to test.
@Smokindog, I know you are frustrated (we both are). But Plex is trying to help here, there is no point in beating them up. Let’s just follow the process and hopefully good things will come of it!
@smokindog I have a HDHomeRun Prime, an HDHomeRun Connect Quatro, an HDHomeRun Extend, two WinTV DualHD USB, a WinTV QuadHD PCI, and a number of other unreleased or minor-player tuners, plus at least one of each of our clients, plus at least 3 running PMS instances. Lots and lots of testing occurs here at my house. Do I run into issues? Yes, for sure, and I fix the ones I come across.
Sometimes, users run into other issues that we haven’t reproduced, are difficult to reproduce, or can’t readily reproduce on our local setups. In these cases, we ask users to help with logs that can indicate the issues so we can narrow down what is happening.
I also see this with one HDHomerun Prime. The channels is there just fine in the HDHR viewer. Removing and re-adding the tuner in PLEX, has changed which channels can’t be played. Began about a month ago.
fyi, I am not letting this drop, but I have not been able to reproduce since the last update. I am kind of mad and kind of happy that I can’t reproduce but we shall see!
