I have two SiliconDust HDHomeRun Extend Tuners capable of providing MPEG4 direct shared video.
The tuner settings are:
Default Transcode Profile: Heavy
DLNA Formats: Advertise 60fps AVS (Heavy devices) is ON, all others are OFF
PLEX settings are:
Transcoder quality: Automatic
Background transcoding x264 preset: Fast
Use hardware acceleration when available: Not Checked
Maximum simultaneous video transcode: unlimited
What I wish to do is have the HDHomeRun Extend deliver direct streaming video in MPEG4 format to PLEX, thereby making Transcoding from MPEG2VIDEO to MPEG4VIDEO unnecessary. But for some reason PLEX is only receiving (an then transcoding) MPEG2VIDEOs with the above settings. What am I missing???
You might be missing the third side of the equation… The client. Plex will transcode to whatever settings the Client requires. Depending on the device you’re on, you are likely forced into a transcoding situation, as it may not directly accept anything that the Extend puts out.
Let me correct myself… MPEG4VIDEO = H264
Im Using AppleTV (4th Gen)…
but what I refer too is how the video is stored on PLEX for example a recent TV show recorded OTA with the above settings produced:
Black Lighting

Where on a movie I got from a torrent produced:

If the HDHomeRun Extend was only producing H264 stream then why would the TV show from example 1 be stored in MPEG2VIDEO format. Which if I understand correctly is causing my APPLE TV to request transcoding back the H264.
I believe the container… and I may be corrected… is determined by the television station.
I read in SiliconDust Forum that setting the HDHomeRun Tuner Extend to:
Default Transcode Profile: Heavy
DLNA Formats: Advertise 60fps AVS (Heavy devices) is ON, all others are OFF
Would force the unit to provide only an H264 stream by default to PLEX. Yet in PLEX i don’t see any OTA recordings labeled as H264. All recordings (100% to-date) thru the tuners say MPEG2VIDEO… What am I missing? (1) want to receive a H264 stream from the HDHomeRun Extend tuners and (2) am I want to store them in H264 format within PLEX so (3) my APPLE TV can receive them in H264 format and avoid transcoding?
What do you have your Plex Server setup for Transcoder Quality. If you have it set to Original Format then Plex when recording is going to override the Extend default setting of Heavy. You should set the device Transcode settings in Plex to the equivalent setting of Heavy which would be Highest Quality in the Plex DVR Settings for the Extend.
