nobody is arguing with you there.
Subscribe user here, I came to forum this morning to let the world know that I just install jellyfin and everything works like old plex app Picture in Picture now works, cellular quality at 720 kilobits works without loosing audio. Weird behaviors non existent.
competition and options are always good. So when Jellyfin ■■■■■ up, I guess we’ll see you back here again.
I guess enshittificationis true even in plex.
PlexAmp is not available on several platforms, including the Nvidia Shield. So this is not an option for many. Same goes for the premature Photo app.
So far seems only available on the mobile (iOS/Android) platforms. The photos app is not good and as far as I remember, no updates since it went public beta ages ago.
Yes it does do bit-perfect audio. Maybe check the settings before giving out misinformation. Exclusive audio would be nice but not sure that would make a meaningful difference or be worth spending development resources on.
Happy to hear you are having a good time and enjoying it - really do. Seems a large number of users are having major issues or problems. BTW, my comparison to windows mobile was stability - ur the bugginess, the slowness and constant crashing - not the experience itself.
Yes, both of these are massive red flags when it comes to flagging music and pictures out of the main application (in addition to that it makes sense to keep videos and pictures together, ask any parent out there). They leave tons of users on e.g., Shield and Apple TV without real alternatives outside the hazzle of Chromecasting from phones etc.
New App is not good, slow , restart needed frequently due to freezing or slowness, loss of feature functionality, and lost watch together feature.
If paying for subscription, you would expect new releases to add functionality and not lose it. Appears they have lost the voice of the customer and developing software that goes backward
I have been a long time plex customer and this new version has me starting to look at alternatives. I hope plex changes course or they will lose customers. Price going up, less functionality, app buggy and performance issues is a fast way to lose customers fast.
Enshittificationitis.
Congratulations Plex: you convinced me to look elsewhere.
It was nice while it lasted and thanks for all the fish.
I don’t use the app often (or post here!), but after spending only 5-10 minutes with it…
The main problem for me is just how abysmally slow the thing is when compared to the old one. I don’t understand how the app can take 30 seconds to show me my library content, when its near instant on the web interface. Every single API call it’s making seems to be going through the TOR network or something, it’s THAT bad.
I may have had more to say but I’m finding it painful to try and use so gave up.
I have also just received the update with the “new” interface. I now understand that the reason I can’t find my music is because it is no longer in the app. I now also note that the photos are gone too. I spent ages looking for them without luck as the user interface is so bad. I came here to look for advice and found this thread.
It is a very bad manners for Plex to not tell us these changes were coming. As you can guess I don’t come here or search the Internet for news about Plex very often. If they want to tell me something they could tell me in the app or in the app update notes. There was nothing to draw my attention to this significant downgrade in functionality and usability. I didn’t note anything in any of the server update notes either. There have been lots of server updates so plenty of opportunity to tell us about the changes, and more importantly that feature upon which we rely are just going away. ![]()
I was shocked to read the extent of the dissatisfaction with the new app. The language and threats put me off from posting. I decided to post as I hope the weight in the number of posts may provoke Plex to reverting the client changes until the code is actually finished and all bugs fixed, the system is peer reviewed, internally tested, alpha tested, beta tested on a small control group of external users and then when all is good finally published. It appears that we have gone from prototyping straight to publication! ![]()
(By the way, I know that I can side load the old version but I do not wish to compromise my phone by disabling updates. As I understand it, Plex will be immediately updated if I leave updates enabled.)
As the update has only just happened I am yet to experience all the bugs and crashes posted here. I can confirm that the new app is slow and screen updates are erratic. I am wearing my finger down to the bone with all the very many more taps and scrolls I need to manipulate the new UI (I am using an Android phone) to find my content of the things I want to use. I mostly used the phone Plex app for music. As it is gone I have little need to Plex on my phone. Fortunately Plex on my TV is still complete and usable. Please don’t tell me that it too is going to become non-functional.
Sorry for the long post. I had planned to post more details about the issues I was experiencing but realised that it has mostly been said before. I have thoughts in my head telling me that if I can’t say something nice I should not say anything at all but as mentioned above, I thought it important to add to the number of posts so that Plex can be more motivated to give us back a complete and working app. Meanwhile I will go back to loading the music I want to listen to onto the local storage of my phone. It will be limiting but it gives me some access to my music.
PlexAmp for Music(been around for a long time) and Plex Photos for Photos (this is still very early beta).
It was reported ages ago that the new app will not support Music or Photos.
I saw the promotion for the PlexAmp app but ignored it as there was no indication that music was to be removed from the main app.
I have just loaded PlexAmp and will go with one of my previous comments. If I can’t say something nice I won’t say anything at all (other that to ask for Music to be restored to the main app).
This entire new release from Plex is a lesson in how NOT to release major changes to an application.
One small example - there have been a ton of posts regarding people asking - where is their music and photos? Folks from Plex, etc. have indicated - “well, it’s been announced previously”. So I went looking to see where it was announced - and sure enough, it’s buried in this wall of text post: The new experience is coming to mobile: What to expect
But here’s the issue - the info about photos and music is buried way towards the bottom of that post. And how many people are actually going to read through that entire post to find that out?!
Plex should’ve gotten the word out a lot better - especially for topics such as MAJOR changes to an application (like removing music and photos). That should have been one of the first topics listed. They could’ve also pushed notifications to clients, sent more emails out, etc. They could have made changes to the legacy app to alert users that a major change was coming. I’m sure they also have statistics on users that use the legacy Plex app for music (not Plexamp users), and target them more specifically.
The fact that they did NONE of this shows how much of a clusterF this rollout has been.
I agree with everything you said, but they announced the new apps in September 2024 in a blog post and email about “product news,” that most people turn off I believe. https://www.plex.tv/blog/the-future-of-plex-focused-streamlined-and-ready-for-feedback/
Their communication is lackluster at best.
They could also ask the community… I did not see a single poll about what could be interesting.
There is a bunch of issues that have not been adressed yet…
I mean I think they sort of mean well…when they do a blog post it’s pretty long/thorough, but that’s really not enough nowadays. They need to be a lot more in your face about it (even if its annoying lol).
Sounds like there is a consensus in the plex community that the plex team made a horrible decision and released software that never went through any quality assurance testing (which never happens… right?)
I’ve been trying to look at this update with an open mind… looking for something in the new UI that was “better” than what we all have come to love (or hate… or at least could deal with). I guess the larger login tiles are kind of nice…
All the issues aside…. Is there anything added that someone “likes”? Because I’m missing it if there is…
