Remote Access - Fast on Web, Very Slow on App / Devices

Hey everyone,

I’m having a very frustrating problem with my Plex server and using remote access. My server is connected to a fiber gigabit (up and down) network with a static IP through Ethernet. Connection to the remote access server works without any issues.

When I playback content from the server using “(https://app.plex.tv)” remotely on my iPad I see that the computer running PMS uploads at 100’s (up to nearly 500) megabits per second. On that same device, running the Plex app struggles to get me more than 30Mbps with constant buffering issues and stuttering. All media is played directly without transcoding. Likewise, Plex on my Samsung TV, Chromecast, and iPhone app all exhibit the same issues. I’m running PMS on a Mac Pro 2019 and the latest MacOS Sonoma.

Any solutions or advice would be greatly appreciated to help Plex run properly through the app / Chromecast as I feel like I’ve tried nearly everything. Thank you!

I have the same problem, but it was since I got a new Sky router, I have setup IP reservations and set the firewall rules to allow both UDP & TCP through 32400.

I have disabled my QNAP firewall and Antivirus.

What is weird, is from my mobile off the network it is fine, but any TV that is linked outside my network fails.

Very frustrating.

Really strange, no settings had changed on my end as far as I know. Was it an issue with updating the Plex server?

So, a little update my side, seems maybe something related to renaming of my server. Some of the families TVs just dont like it.

Any idea how i get LG and Samsung TVs to forget tge config and relink?

im also on version 1.32.7.7621. mine is fresh install 2 days ago. (ive been a plex user for over 10 years)
My plex server runs in synology my OS/IOS is all apple
I have pfsense with haproxy. externally everything connects to https mydomain. internally its connects to http mydomain:32400

my haproxy stats show its up and functioning. (never shows down)
all remote access works. if i log into plex.tv it works. if i log into https mydomain it works. plex app and plexamp app works
performance is good.
upnp enable or disabled doesn’t make a difference (i leave it off)

The weird part is that the remote access page sometimes reports “Not available outside your network” and sometimes it reports “Full access outside your network” mostly its not available but there is no interruption in service.

EDIT: Spoke too soon… app and chromecast Plex was working great until about 45 minutes in when the upload bandwidth suddenly dropped causing stuttering. I’m not sure what else to try at this point.

So I went through a full uninstall of Plex, which on MacOS includes deleting the cache and Library folder assets for the app: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/

This seemed to resolve the issue on my phone and Chromecast devices. It’s now uploading at a much faster speed. Hopefully can help someone experiencing similar problems.

Hey so to clarify you recommend a full uninstall and reinstall? And that worked?

I just did a full uninstall and reinstall and nope still the same issue and now I have to put all my files in again.

What on earth can be done to fix this?!

Sorry this seemed to improve the issue temporarily but Plex on web still streams at 100-200mbps without issues and the Plex app stays at 20-50mbps and has drops that causes buffering. Very weird.

Are you running your server on MacOS as well?

Negative, I’m on Windows. I had another user in a different thread fix my issue, but it was a Windows fix. Not sure how it would work for Mac
