Remote access intermittently not working

I have a Plex server set up on a Windows 11 machine. The IP of that server is fixed. In my router I have set up port forwarding so as to ensure that I can access my server outside my network. This works, for a short while but then switches back to not being accessable outside the network. If I then click the try again button on the Plese page, the Accessable to outside network turns green, but later will turn red again. Nothing changes ip is the same etc. what would cause this ?

The Plex remote access settings will display the status as green while it’s testing. Hence what you see (green status turning red after some time) usually means it’s not working to begin with.

Have you already verified if your port forward is still accessible / working (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org)? You should also be able to check if the public IP recognized from outside your network matches that seen by Plex ?remote access settings) and your router’s WAN IP.

I think the latest update has some buggy code for Remote Access.
On MacOS since the last update Remote Access will be green for awhile then turn red.
It works and after a time shuts itself off.

Clicking the manual recheck button turns it green again and people can connect, but only for a minute or so and then it turns itself off again. Rebooting the machine gives a longer time before it auto reds itself.

I’m thinking they’ve pushed out some buggy code perhaps and am really hoping that they post a release that fixes it. so annoying. in my case i think it is related to ipv6 which i use, and it doing some things over ipv4 and ipv6 intermittantly? not sure.

I wish there was better logs.
I also wish there was a way to set the remote IP on the Remote access screen instead of it sometimes showing my local subnet, sometimes my globally accessable ipv6 and sometimes nothing at all. what it shows doesn’t seem to affect functionality but it is weird.

Best of luck with your issue.

I have a feeling that might be some wishful thinking on your part. More likely there’s some hiccup in how your server is exposed, how your network setup is working or some ISP challenges.

@rfroman

On Settings → Remote Access, when it says “Not accessible…”, does any of the text mention Double NAT?

Contact your ISP and ask if they use CG-NAT addressing, which does not support port forwarding. If so, ask if they can provide a public IPv4 address that supports port-forwarding (bypassing their CG-NAT addressing). They may charge extra for doing so.

You should be able to use Plex Relay, which tunnels the connection through Plex servers, but the speed is limited to 2 mbps per remote stream.
