Remote Access is practically unusable on weekends throughout August

Server Version#:1.24.1.4931
Player Version#:any

I don’t know if it’s the Plex servers on their end or what, but every Friday and Saturday night this month, everything becomes totally unstable. Friends are having a helluva time trying to remotely play from my server while everything is working optimally on my end.

If this was intermittent this would be more difficult to identify, but it’s literally only during the peak hours on the weekends and this is the third weekend in a row.

Loading the Dashboard with what’s playing sometimes shows sometimes doesn’t. The Plex Dash app becomes useless, I have no answers except everything points to Plex’s servers being unable to keep up with the traffic. But it would be nice of a Plex employee to address this issue or if they’re even aware of it.

For non-Plex employees weighing in, I don’t need to do any troubleshooting steps. I’ve done everything I can for three weekends in a row. If you’ve experienced this and you have a solution or understand what’s happening, please weigh in. If you haven’t experienced this or want to provide theories, please move onto the next thread. No offense, but I don’t have time to deal with unsubstantiated opinions in getting this resolved.

Sounds similar to my issue. I get a lot of complaints that remote playback not working, and although I never made the correlation because I always am able to playback locally I think you could be on to something! This has been ongoing for at least a couple of months, please investigate ASAP.

Yeah, I hadn’t pinpointed it until recently, but it’s been an ongoing issue ever since they did the overhaul earlier this year. Even tonight, a Monday, I’m having issues. And it’s not just isolated to my remote viewers, it’s local as well. I can tell the problems are coming when the Dashboard either isn’t loading what’s playing or is inaccurately reporting back what’s playing. Either when it’s not showing what’s playing at all or the time goes beyond the run time, even tho the person has stopped playing on their end, but it keeps running on my end.

Plus, I know there’s a problem with the Plex servers when I add something new and none of the artwork will load. There’s nothing I can do on my end to correct that. Just patiently wait for the Plex servers to respond. My guess is that their servers just can’t handle the uptick in traffic and no one has gotten their attention to address it.

It’s why having a direct line of communication for technical support is so vital to a business. Forums aren’t ideal since these threads just get lost. But that’s an entirely different beast I don’t want to keep bashing my head against.

A Plex Employee needs to reply to this thread.

I setup a custom server access url using dynamic DNS and haven’t noticed remote playback issues since, not sure if it’s a coincidence or not.

Here we go on another weekend night and Plex is running like CRAP. Everything stalls. Been fine all day, we get to the peak hours and consistently this has continued to happen. I’ve rebooted the computer three times hoping to get a different connection. Can a Plex employee please speak up???

Problems are back again tonight. This still hasn’t been addressed by Plex.

Problems continue… And Plex employees are nowhere to be found. Wonderful support you guys have.

If your server is setup correctly the connection between your users and server is direct. Plex would only provide the initial authentication via API.

Deselect the option in your server for Enable Relay

Settings, Network (Show Advanced).

While you are there, ensure you have the custom server access url filled out if you are using a reverse proxy rather than open ports.

It’s the initial connection that’s the problem. And then everything just basically goes offline. It just happened again. I appreciate the suggestion but that’s not it. I haven’t altered any of the standard settings and I haven’t done any workarounds of any kind.

You aren’t being shaped by your ISP are you ?

This sounds more like a local network issue.

I’ve never encountered it TBH, not in the manner you suggest but I know one local ISP that sniffs traffic and shapes users when high network load

Problem is back again tonight. Will anyone from Plex ever address this???

Problems have returned again. Hello Plex support!

Just got pinged about this thread. This was an issue similar to this several months ago, but that should have been resolved. If you are still seeing this, please make a note the next time of the exact time you see this. PM me your public IP and the date/time/timezone when you see this and I can look if there is something on our end. Also send me your PMS logs for the timeframe when this occurs.

Thank you. Thank you. I will indeed. It seems to happen mainly during high high peak hours.

The one thing I can say that I’ve noticed is the Plex Dash app seems to affect it in some ways. When that went down, things were running fine. When the app got restored to working order again, the problems returned. I don’t have any idea what you identified that problem as before, but I’ve noticed that causing some issues sometimes.

However, it appears to be a bigger issue than just the app cuz it’s not isolated to it.

It’s happening now. Started around 745p.
