Remote access issue after server move

Server Version#: 1.43.5.11079 in binhex-plex Docker container
Player Version#: Latest - not sure of the version, but I just uninstalled and reinstalled
I just migrated my Plex server from Windows 11 to Unraid. I have switched over the remote access to the new server (e.g. changing port forwarding on the router), and while the Remote Access tab on the UI says it’s not working, it definitely is, as I have confirmed it both over a cellular connection and VPN.

At a friend’s house, I can access the remote server fine from my phone (and started media playback), but their Roku keeps saying that the remote server is offline. Here is what I have tried/confirmed so far…

  • Signed out of the app, removed it from the Roku, power cycled, re-installed logged back in
  • Secure connections is set to Preferred on the server

What am I missing here? The friend’s Roku has accessed my Plex server for years without issue.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Reset/refresh your plex certificate.

Stop plex, go to the cache directory in the plex media server folder. Is there a certificate.p12 file? If so, rename it certificate.p12.old and start plex back up. It should download cert-v2.p12

See if that changes the status to green/available.

Progress! This fixed my dreaded red exclamation mark in the Plex UI.

My remote user now says that the server shows as online, but when they try to play something, it’s giving him a playback error.

One important point I left out in my original post was that I copied over ALL of the Plex Media Server folder from the Win11 PC to the Unraid installation. I got that from Google AI…was it hallucinating an actual solution?

That’s usually fine, but I would clear out the codecs directory and maybe the Cache directory as well (minus the new cert) so the server downloads it all again as needed.

The error you’re getting may be related to the server trying to transcode and failing…would be best to look at server and app logs to see what is actually happening.

Others are better at reading the logs, so can share them as well.

Did you recreate the Plex settings too? If not, then this is a new server and you need to reshare with your friend. The app might be showing cached info from your old server, which is why you see something in the ui, but it doesn’t work. After gaining access, they’ll want to remove the old favorites libraries from the old server and add the libraries from the new server.

I think it’s all good now. I had rebooted the Unraid server this morning for an update, and the device files for the TV tuner had their permissions borked. The error the user was seeing was because the tuner device was N/A. After I fixed that, it’s working. I didn’t realize they were doing Live TV until I looked at the server log.

Thank you for the replies! In the end, the cert appears to have been the root of the problem.
