Server Version#: 1.32.5.7516-7000
Player Version#: all of them
ok you guys were great help before with my NAS drive not updating my media content, hopefully you can save me again.
I tried to share my library with someone on my friends list. they got the invite, and couldnt start the film. they shared pictures showing “cannot access item Server is unreachable”
i checked my setting and saw remote access is not available outside my network. I followed the basic instructions and checked that my router is UPNP enabled, i had the option in the second section to retry my manually specified public port. With NO Change it suddenly said remote access is possible, green font and a nice link to click that showed all my stuff. however with this menu still in front of me within 30 seconds it went to red font and saying the same thing.
Now i have a VPN on my Synology NAS but its set for download station only. Its not on my browsers on my PC. and my router does not support VPNS in the first place so its not the issue. i am fully updated with plex server on my NAS, i even bought the damn lifetime plex pass.
my NAS is a DS218J if that matters. i also run windows on my PC but the issues seem to be NAS specific.
i DID forward the port on my router 32400 on both the internal and external AS the plex page instruction say to. and it had a drop down of names for the devices on the network and i specificized NAS Drive (everything else was tablets and phones and such) . it did not work.
I then input the IP specifically. I then took the external IP provided by plex and went to a port forwarding site, and it said the port was closed despite appearing green for the time being. that time being about 30 seconds. then back to red.
i still cannot keep remote access green. i need help.
the quote provided by plex i meant was the webiste instruction for port
Forward the Port in the Router
In order to forward a port for Plex Media Server, you’ll need three main pieces of information:
WAN/External Port: Port 32400 (TCP) is default, but you can generally use any available port in the 20,000 to 50,000 range.
LAN/Internal Port: This will always be 32400.
IP Address: The local IP Address of the computer running the Plex Media Server. This is what you did above.
i haven’t touched my VPN as its more a setting i keyed into one app on my NAS, that is NOT plexmediaserver, its not something i integrated into my router. I mean i could try to disable the only setting i put in Download Station but I’m hoping its something else. unless i can see some precedent for it.
also how do i do partial quotes and replies like you just did? do i use Blockquote and copy paste and then close with another block quote? or hit the quote whole post and then trim off the stuff i don’t want?
also i just checked Download Station and i can’t even see what i did to add the VPN to it. I cant see any trace of it. so maybe i added it somewhere else but i have NO idea where to start to mess with that. I just know i did it, and i don’t get letters from my ISP anymore.
I mean just turn it off Temporarily and see. Else you will be trying things wondering where the bottleneck is when you can rule the VPN out by just turning it off for a few minutes and try remote access when it is off. If it still does not work then it probably isn’t a factor and you can turn it back on.
What ISP do you have? What router? are you sure you do not have a doublenat?
Select the text and there will be a quote button above it.
I’m not sure where i would look for that. It’s not i have the app turned on. I mean i COULD browse with my VPN to get some sites, but i havent connected it for a while. looking right at it and its not connected, still. i could uninstall it but it should be as good as gone when turned off, correct?
my ISP is Bell, the router does not allow VPN installation (i recall trying and finding that out) and the modem is just called 3000 on the front. I could try pulling out out for more info to look behind it but thats all the front says.
my router’s stated IP and “What is my IP Address” test results are both the same, so i believe i am no in a Double NAT.
i have wireless for my mobile devices, but my NAS is connected to it through Ethernet Cable, and it’s also connected to my PCs through Ethernet cables. I have never heard of CGNAT nor have i seen it in any of the settings i touch (which isn’t many, i admit)
it does have firewall settings but it appears Plex Media Server has already put 32400 as an allowed port. i am sure i did not put it there myself but i can see its there. It’s the first one there as well, so highest priority.
Where do you add the VPN information to Synology Download Station? I’d like to give it a try. Maybe it is terribly obvious and I just missed it.
Regarding CG-NAT: What is the connection from the router back to the Internet? CableTV, Fiber, copper wire, etc. Some ISPs offer wireless home internet service. The router connects to their mobile network, not terrestrial copper/fiber. If the connection is to the mobile network, then it is most likely not compatible with Plex remote access.
Some things to check:
The server is claimed, correct? Settings → Server_Name → General displays “Server claimed by your_email_address.”
From a PC/Mac/phone/etc on the same network as the NAS, go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ (or similar site).
Does the IPv4 address match what is displayed as the Public IP Address in Settings → Remote Access?
What is the first octet of the IP address (192.x.y.z, 108.x.y.z, etc.)?
In Settings → Remote Access, please verify that the “Manually specify…” checkbox is selected and the port is 32400.
If all the above check out and remote access still does not work please do the following:
Stop Plex Media Server.
Wait one minute for the server to settle.
Start Plex Media Server.
Wait 3 - 5 minutes for Plex to start and log the startup sequence.
Go to Settings → Remote Access.
Enable remote access.
Wait for it to fail.
Pull server log files in Settings → Troubleshooting.
no. my phone IP4 matches the IP by my modem (as accessed on my PC) but the Remote access IP is not the same. i would like to know how i can change that to match it. on my phone and modem the first octet is 76. but the Public IP in Remote Setting is 136.
but the “Manually specific public port” is checked, and the port is the same.
I have. and 8 minutes later up, now the public IP matches the phone and modem IP.
i turned my phone to wifi OFF, accessed plex, and tried to play an episode using my data (in hopes of accessing remotely) and was met with "Error unable to play media. "
but remote access still appears green in the settings. so there’s that. Also if the VPN was THAT issue, is there a way to have both, or do i need to turn VPN off whenever i want to use Plex? or avoid using plex when i want to safely download things?
One approach could be to use a docker container on your Synology to run a download client including a VPN. That way, only the docker container will use the VPN, while Plex gets “out” directly.
ok so remote access SAYS its still green but i am unable to play stuff on my phone. . Am i supposed to enter an IP adress somewhere on it? should it send my phone to the IP being attached to my server?
i can’t say i’ve heard of that. so essentially an app that works LIKE download Station?
I hope it has a phone app as well cause those 2 work so well together as is.
sounds like a complex runaround. Wouldn’t it be easier for me if Plex just allowed me to change the remote access server IP to match my external IP? or would that just lead me to the same problem i have now where they match but still don’t work?
