Server Version#:1.41.6.9685
Player Version#:4.146.0 (I think)
So last night I was adding movies to my library and one of the three movie files disappeared (wound up being lumped in with one of the other movies and I had to seperate them, not important). This led me to realizing that my HD movies were streaming in 328p, so I went down a rabbit hole trying to fix that.
I found a Reddit post where someone was having the same issue, and they said they solved it by “[going] into a setting and turned off remote access then turned it back on”. So I figured I’d try it. After I disabled remote access though, the settings menu changed and I no longer have an option to access like half of the options that were there.
Thus far, I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the server app (with and without VPN), I’ve tried removing the server and reconnecting it, I restored defaults in the Debug option, and a bunch of trouble shooting from the help pages but I can’t find anything that is actually working.
This has made it so that my server is unnable to connect at all, and I can’t reverse what I did because the option to do so is now missing. Any and all help would be appreciated.
This implies that you were accessing your server via plex relay connection. Which should not be the norm, if both your web browser and your Plex server are within the same local network.
This is the first thing you should investigate. If your server is indeed local, why is it not appearing within the same local network?
Look out for
virtualization or containerization software (i.e. “Docker” et al)
VPN software
more than one “router”-type device
any sort of “network bridge”, which is used to extend your home network across a different network medium, like coax, or wireless
Any of these can potentially “fragment” your local network, dividing it up into several subnets.
Think about how your server is connected to the rest of the network.
If your server is running on regular Windows, verify that the network connection in Windows is tagged as “private”, not “public”. If it’s the latter, change it.
Changed the network privacy to private and nothing, both with and without a VPN connection. I’m not sure how I would have ran it in a relay connection, I’ve had the same connection the entire time I’ve used Plex. How would it have been turned on?
And just so i’m sure, the server is the app in the program files labled as “plex Media Server”, right? It seems to recognise it when I click on it through the file explorer and open Plex in the browser, but it can’t connect to it and gives me the options of “Try Again”, “Learn More”, and “Remove Server”, which I tried before I reinstalled the server alltogether.
This was not the complete fix. It was merely a first step.
Your server appears to have 2 IP adresses. Is this a laptop with both wireless and wired network?
You should never activate the wireless adapter if the server machine is wired.
Disable one network adapter, then stop and restart the Plex media server using its task tray icon.
Verify stable and continuous internet connectivity before proceeding.
