Remote access never works for me

Oh man always issues with remote access thank God I seem to not need it but when I need it I can never get it to work :grimacing:. A helpful support member help me finally figure out what the problem was in the server settings which often would show remote access enabled but then it would quickly or be unavailable at some point. This is due to my Synology NAS and using a VPN within it which seems to screw it up and Plex doesn’t like that… However it’s showing it’s enabled and should be available have chosen manually the specific ports… And I’m sure at one point in the past it has been available remotely when all aligns in the universe but once again issues it seems I can’t ever get this working reliably.

Shows NAS is not available when I am trying remote access. Although the Synology app DSvideo which is a often sad replica of Plex as it doesn’t provide support for all the possible codecs which is a complete nuisance, however it is accessing remote library without any problem. If im able to get some kind of walk-through on this that might allow me to reliably get remote access that would be awesome. Have never been able to reliably get remote access to Library and that’s been for years, so I really do need to address this. I’m sure it’s a simple fix but why why is there always an issue :grimacing::open_mouth:

Edit: oh great once again remote access is showing unavailable again suddenly even after disabling the VPN which I thought from our last dealings was the issue now it’s showing not available outside your network once again it’s going away and being the same unreliable unavailable network access once again in the remote access tab. Argh! Thought this was dealt with last time with turning off the VPN and showing maybe it being more reliable but once again it’s completely unreliable and shuts off access after a few minutes. So frustrating but I can’t seem to get this working after years of paying for this…

…few minutes later… however now it’s showing green again after I’ve refreshed and tried applying manual specific public court and I can get access on the app now, at least for now. I’m not sure how long it will last maybe it will maybe it won’t…

Thanks for all you do

I’ll try to lay this out

  1. VPNs + Plex == PAIN, LOTS OF.
  • PMS looks at you real (modem’s) WAN IP and your real LAN IP
  • When you turn on a VPN, your modem WAN IP != Public WAN IP
  • It breaks right here because the two addresses never match
  1. Your ISP is going to see traffic whether in a VPN or not
    – If your ISP is Plex-hostile, that’s a completely separate issue.

  2. Plex uses HTTPS (which is encrypted) so nobody can see what you’re streaming.

There are two ways to implement this:

  1. Forget any and all concept of trying to hide your streaming in a VPN because you’re still streaming and it’s actually still trackable (every VPN packet has a
    destination IP address).

  2. Create / establish a SITE-VPN in front of your modem/router so that ALL traffic into and out of your LAN never knows who your real ISP is.

  3. Create a ā€œsplit vpnā€ configuration which allows you to separate out only that traffic you want in the VPN. That traffic, MUST, be fully captive and not leak different IP addresses . (captive is the key)

For now, Basic test:

  1. Turn off the VPN
  2. Turn off Remote Access
  3. Log into your modem/router and either enable UPNP (automatic port mapping)
    –OR–
Manually create a static port forwarding rule, TCP, from some arbitrary WAN port (your choice) to the LAN IP, port 32400, of your Syno
    –OR–
  4. If you’re using the DSM firewall, confirm 32400/tcp incoming is ALLOWED.
  5. Now enable remote access.
    – it might fail first time.
    – Automatic port = UPNP. Get that to match your settings and RETRY if needed.
    – If manual, enter the WAN port you decided on and retry.
  6. If you’ve done it right, 10-15 seconds later, you’ll get green indicator which will STAY GREEN. (ignore the optimistic green as you turn it on)

thanks for thorough reply… I don’t use any VPN of any kind when trrying to use remote access… not my surfshark and not the vpn avail in synology. This has been a constant pain in butt for years now it seems and I pay for plex pass… i have often just given up in frustration. it has worked periodically, i dont know why or what the variable is but at times it has stayed avail for more than 5 minutes… otherwise it’s a mess. I wish Plex provided actual phone support for this. I will try the suggestions, but not holding out much hope as even a few months ago, the last fix given looked like it worked… and then soon after once again it stopped working. I cannot change my internet to create a static address however, only dynamic is available according to them but the Deco app is very helpful and thorough otherwise.
