Hi all! Just looking for some settings advice to help out a friend. The Plex server is running off of my Nvidia Shield TV. My upload speed is quite low, about 4 Mbps on average when tested. The Bitrate of a sample file my friend is having trouble playing is 17128 kbps. In Remote Access Settings I have set Internet Upload Speed to 4 Mbps and Limit Remote Stream Bitrate to 4 Mbps (she’s not too bothered about the quality being amazing or not). Should this be good enough? Or should I change some settings, maybe some other ones I don’t know about?
Actually, setting the Internet Upload Speed should be sufficient.
The Remote Stream Bitrate is useful if you’re dealing with multiple concurrent remote streams and want to ensure the 1st user to stream isn’t eating away the entire bandwidth.
Thanks. So it’s still not working for her. She just messaged me and said she’s getting a message saying Multimedia File Not Supported. Any way to fix this?
Sorry, she’s really drip feeding me the info! It’s when she tries to play the movie on her Samsung TV. The file/container is MKV and the codec is HEVC.
Does it play locally in some other player (e.g. VLC)
What technical information has Plex analyzed? → ⋮ > Get Info – for full details click View XML from that dialog and ask her to copy the first ~20 lines (the part from <Media to </Media>)
She’s actually streaming from my server. The file plays fine for me on everything I’ve tried, mobile phone, laptop etc so the file is fine. I thought the issue was due to the large file size and my low upload speed but now she says it’s saying Multimedia File Not Supported. Is it just a case her Samsung TV can’t play certain file types?
In that case your Plex Media Server should attempt to transcode the file to a format the client supports – that is unless you have disabled transcoding (Settings > [Server Name] > Transcoder > Disable video stream transcoding)
What Samsung platform is she using?
There’s the aged Smart Hub platform (which is for the most part no longer supported) and the Samsung Tizen platform. The version number of the Plex app on that Smart TV could help identifying it.
