Remote Access Stopped Working / Acting Weirdly

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392-6000
Player Version#: Version 4.56.4 (Plex Web)

So I recently updated/patched my plex server on my synology NAS, and every time I try and setup remote access, the light goes green for a couple of seconds/minutes and the when I refresh the page It goes back to red. I’m not entirely sure what the problem is, it use to work perfectly fine on and off the network.

Setup I’m running:

  1. ISP (Telstra) Modem in bridge mode (NAT disabled) connected to an Asus RT88U Router
  2. My outside (ISP) IP matches the Wan IP on the Router
  3. Tried multiple configurations of UPNP On/Off, Router Firewall On/Off → No success
  4. Port forwarded, tried both setting up automatically and manually. Ports 32400, and a random external one

I am also a tad confused. so after it was green and then went back to red, I opened the app up on my phone (on a 4g/5g) connection and was able to get into the server. I could see my family photos, videos, music and movies. I could launch the music randomly and browse the photos. When I wanted to start a 1080p movie, it said ‘unable to play media’. So clearly it is occasionally talking to the server.

If anyone could provide some insight / help that would be amazing. I have also attached the logs. I tried having a look myself but wasnt entirely sure where to start with them.

Thanks in advance

Go to your Asus Router WAN status page and check if your WAN IP start with 100. Your server is working through the relay and that’s way you’re able to access low-bandwidth consuming stuff (fotos, music) and not Movies.
Because through the relay, your NAS will have to transcode the movie down to 720, and you probably disabled transcoding at Settings → Transcoder

Negative - holding off as long as possible. Telstra Cable about 110-140Mbps, only about 5 up though

Starts with 101. Cant my phone accept 1080p though? I probably should add I was also trying remote connection with my girlfriends 4k tv (completely separate household). After giving her access it said that my server was offline

Ok, you have a valid IP. Try setting your NAS DNS server to 8.8.8.8.

So in the Synology NAS, Control Panel → Network → Manually configure DNS server → Change preferred DNS to 8.8.8.8 or alternative DNS to 8.8.8.8?

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively

Done that but to no avail. I could try rebooting NAS to see if that changes anything

Im not sure if NBN is the issue here though. I dont have it but am having troubles with the remote access

I think that just disabling remote access and enabling it again would be enough

I can confirm that your port forwarding is working.
@trumpy81 do you think that this is that dns rebind thing?

Tried that, went green, then refreshed the page and then it went back to red

https://www.whatismyip.com/ do you see here the same IP you see in your router wan interface?

Did you make any other changes like changing the hosts file or installed a vpn client on your NAS?

Yeah my public IP matches my Wan IP on the router which matches the IP in plex. Eventually Im thinking of moving my server onto my tower which will do all the transcoding etc. Do you think that this might fix it ?

I can telnet to his IP on 32400 and it connects. Getting out of options.

Settings → Transcoder → Uncheck Disable video stream transcoding

Your Plex page is taking FOREVER to open. What’s your upload speed?

You fellas have fixed it!!! Went outside on 3bars 4g and managed to stream a movie for a couple of seconds (bit laggy but thats my end) and then the misso was also able to access it. For some reason my ping has jumped to 130ms and my upload can get to 5Mbps which is shocking. So it all seems to be working and once im on NBN we should be able to stream high quality outside the local network.

Have a beer for me lads
