Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309-f5213a238
Player Version#: 4.12.3
I have read and followed numerous suggestions from the forum. I’m am completely out of ideas. I have confirmed all my settings are correct. I have spoken to Synology, TP-Link (my router), and users on this forum. I am hoping that someone here has a suggestion I can try. The following is my configuration and what I can confirm:
Synology IP: 192.168.0.187
Plex Port: 32400
TPLink Router:
Reserved IP Address for Synology: 192.168.0.187
Port Forwarding: 42333 (external) to 32400 (internal) (TCP and UDP)
Tests:
Double NAT Test: Confirmed Double NAT not active
*** Browser local: 192.168.0.187:32400 (access to Plex successful)**
*** Browser remote: XX.XXX.XXX.XX:42333 (access to Plex successful)**
Plex.tv Login and External access setting: XX.XXX.XXX.XX:42333 to 192.168.0.187:32400 (unsuccessful)
Firewalls on all devices off (unsuccessful)
Antivirus on all devices off (unsuccessful)
Plex App (android) local access (successful)
Plex App (android) remote access (unsuccessful) (I didn’t set up the manual IP address)
Hardware:
Tested on Synology, Netgear, and TPLink Routers
External access was working on TPLink AX6000 that failed a few months ago.
Settings on all devices are the same as they were when external access was working
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Does https://canyouseeme.org with your external IP and port 42333 report success ?
Its always possible your ISP is blocking you so if your sure your settings are correct have you checked with them also ?
BTW… while its entirely up to you I’d also recommend only enabling port forwarding over TCP. There was a vulnerability a few months back found over UDP and I believe plex now recommend only TCP connections. See → What network ports do I need to allow through my firewall? | Plex Support for details.
I update through my Synology NAS. The package updater does not say there is an update. If I were to update on the web, obviously this has no effect on my Synology NAS; and, it was recommended to not manually update packages on Synology for compatibility reasons.
I only setup UDP because I was out of ideas. I will remove the UDP port forwarding.
Regarding checking with ISP: I have confirmed the ports I am using are not on my ISP provider’s block list. Also, given I can use my IP provided by my ISP and the external port address in a remote browser to access Plex, doesn’t this confirm my ISP isn’t blocking me?
Excellent that confirms service is getting through. I’d suggest upgrading your server version to the latest as there might be something funky with it being so old. Maybe the newer clients failing to connect to it remotely?
The version in the Synology Package Center is over a year old. Unless there is something specific to the model of your NAS, you should manually update to a current version.
You can configure it to monitor your Plex remote access port, and will send you an e-mail if it cannot reach your server. Default is to check it every 5 minutes. You can change the interval if desired. The free account can monitor 50 items.
This was, in fact, the problem. I’ve had my NAS for years. It was a warning on from my NAS years ago about installing a package for Plex, that at the time, had not yet been validated by Synology. They recommended that you wait until the package was added to the update list.
I will not be using this methodology in the future.
Thanks everyone for helping, validating I wasn’t crazy, and confirming you should maintain your updates. Thanks very much.
@zworld1 something else to consider as your coming off such an old server version. The newer plex servers have upgraded scanners/agents for Movies and TV Shows. At some point you might want to consider upgrading them to the new improved versions.
hello, i can’t seem to get my PLEX TV server to play even on my own network or the remote remote network outside of my home. why is this a issue?? i also have SPECTRUM INTERNET
Focus on local playback first, before remote access.
Additional information beyond “it doesn’t work” would help.
Can you see your own libraries with your movies/tv shows/etc?
What happens when you try to stream a movie/show/etc? An error message (what does it say?), screen goes black, flames shoot out of your server, etc.
I’m having a very similar issue with my Plex server on a Synology DS220j - despite following all instructions and confirming that all my settings are correct, remote access does not work. I posted a topic about it in this forum, complete with log files, but it’s been two weeks and so far nobody has responded. Since this thread seems more active, perhaps someone from here could check it out?
@anon5074910 provided us with the solution above in the thread, which I indicated. The issue is with the version of the software - my external access stopped suddenly, too. SOLUTION: Update your server software - manually, if needed. This resolved all of my issues.
