Remote Access: Two External IP Addresses

After a lot of testing I think I’ve finally figured out what’s wrong with remote access on our Plex server - I don’t think Plex can cope with having two external IP addresses.

We have two connections into our home which come into a Vigor 2860n before distribution on to the LAN. Traffic may appear and leave through either of the connections. The router is set up so that traffic to the Plex remote access port coming down either of the connections will be routed to the Plex server. With no changes to configuration sometimes remote access would work and sometimes it wouldn’t and I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong.

I’ve now locked the Plex IP and port to one IP address and it seems to be rock solid so I’ve come to the conclusion traffic through two external IP addresses is confusing it. I’ve tried it on both IP addresses and it just works on either as long as there’s only one of them.

First question: Is my conclusion correct?
Second question: If it is, is there any way to persuade Plex to use both connections?

I realise this is not a normal use-case.

Thanks.

Kevin

The straight answer is

  1. yes
  2. No

There is no way of telling Plex media server to bind to a specific IP. It would try to use All local IP adresses but For remote access port mapping there is only one route and you cannot decide which it would be

I had a feeling that might be the answer.

Ok thanks, I’ll leave it connected to the one IP address in that case.
