Remote Access with Eero

Ok, I’ve been fighting this for months now, and I’m finally sick of it.

I am having trouble with remote access to my Plex Server after I installed an Eero wifi system. I have CenturyLink DSL service coming in to an Actiontec C1000a modem/router combo. From there, I connected (hardwired) my main Eero, and then split all of my networked devices off from the Eeros.

Problem is, when I try to enable remote access on the Plex, it never works. I’ve tried everything (I think). Tried changing the modem to ‘transparent bridge’ mode, but that basically kills my internet everywhere. Tried port-forwarding, but I’m either setting it up wrong, or that doesn’t work.

Does anyone on here have an eero system with Centurylink, and are you having issues with remote access?? Please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem a month ago when I moved into a CenturyLink area. The problem is you run into a Double NAT situation (CL modem/router is handling router functions, as is the Eero). The best solution is to put CL into transparent bridge mode and let Eero handle all the router stuff. But, this doesn’t work, as you experienced, because CL requires PPPOE and Eero does not support that (basically, the Eero cannot access the CL data without it). There are many requests for Eero to adopt ssuppor, but so far Eero has been non-committal.

The next thing you can do is put the Eero in bridge mode, which surrenders all traffic authenticating to the CL modem/router, but still uses the Eero to disperse your network. The downside to this is you lose much of the advanced network controls with Eero. This worked for me for a bit, but I started getting connection issues with Plex again, so I took the additional step of setting up port forwarding. There is a specific website that tells you how to port forward for Plex, though I don’t remember it off the top of my head. That also improved things some, but I still frequently have remote access issues with Plex. It’s a bandaid, but it works to a degree.

If anyone else has had better success, I’d love to hear it.

Heya, I just was wondering if you got your solution figured out, mjschuetz. Thanks!

It boils down to Eero not supporting PPPOE. There’s a feature request into the Eero team, so hopefully they do something soon. Here’s the link:
