Remote Connecting via PIA

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3616

Okay here goes, this will be a bit long winded.

When I lived with my folks they had access to my plex media server via local network, since I have moved away and because of the second lockdown they wish to be able to use Plex again.

Now when I moved in the fiber connection was slow so I ended up going with a 4G Router, getting an Unlimited sim card with EE, the speeds are really great but with one caveat, the NAT, CGNAT. I have tried every possible combination of port forwarding and using a VPN (PIA) to get plex working with remote access to no avail but I am not one to admit defeat. Most other users of PIA seems to have an easy time with it, connecting to a server of choice and setting the manual port in plex to match the one they receive from the PIA client. When I do this, it says remote access is available but then a few moments later say it is not. The router I am using is the Archer MR600, it has OpenVPN, P2PVPN and IPSec.

I’m not expecting much and posting here is my last resort, I’d appreciate if anyone has any insight.

Is it just your parents? If so, could you not do it the other way around and get them to VPN in to your network? Set up your router as a VPN server (if capable) and use a Dynamic DNS service to route to it? What are you using as your Plex Server? If your router is not capable, could you not set it up as a VPN server and do the same thing?

I am currently hosting the Plex server on my Windows 10 PC, I have thought about being able to connect our networks using a VPN, but I’m not knowledgeable enough with networking to know how to do that, while the router does have OpenVPN Server, you need the open VPN Client to connect to it, using Plex on smart TV’s wouldn’t be possible with that I think.

I am facing the same situation. I thought perhaps a double NAT was at fault because I have two routers (my server runs behind Router#2 which is using an OpenVPN client while Router#1 doesn’t ). So I have setup port forwarding and DMZ but the problem remained. I have disabled NOD (antivirus / firewall) but the problem remained the same. Remote Access disconnected randomly… then I have disabled the VPN on Router#2… Now the Remote Access holds. So in my case the problem was the fact that I am running Plex server from behind a router connected to PIA (Private Internet Access) vpn.

How to fix this though? I have no clue. I am still investigating.
