Hi,
Since a few days now, all remote playback devices keep buffering during playback
Regardless of what i am watching
On different devices too
I have updated to the latest version too
Any ideas on why ??
What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? This should expose some critical information like:
- is the remote connection “broken”, using an indirect/relayed connection instead of a direct remote connection?
- is the video/audio being transcoded (using software vs hardware transcoding)

What’s the configuration of your Plex on this iPhone under Settings > Quality > Video Quality for Remote Streaming and Limit Cellular Data?
Similarly… what do you have configured for under Settings > [Server Name] > Remote Access for your Plex Media Server? -> did you set a low Internet Upload Speed or did you set a value under Limit remote stream bitrate (both are advanced settings that might be hidden by default).
On the iphone:
Limit Cellular Data: 0.7 Mbps, 320p
Remote Dtreaming: 3Mbps, 720p HD
Home Streaming: Recommended
Use Low Quality: Enabled
Default Settings on Remote Access
No Upload Speed Set
Nothing has been changed before this occured as well
I get this issue on my firestick and Samsung TV as well
Changed or not those iPhone Plex settings explain why the videos are being transcoded to such a low quality.
Not sure why it’s causing some additional buffering – transcoding to such a low quality target should be manageable for most CPUs.
I can increase that for better quality, but the issue of buffering on all devices still stands …
