Most likely not.
While it is true that a Plex Pass allows the owner to use Plex relay with 2mbps instead of just 1mbps bandwidth, it is not the real cause of the issues.

However, if they are using the modern mobile Plex apps (and going forward, other Plex apps in the future), they will be needing either

  • a Remote Watch Pass of their own OR
  • you to own a full Plex Pass on the server’s account

Because remote access to a Plex server is no longer freely available.
You can find a FAQ about this change here: https://www.plex.tv/blog/important-2025-plex-updates/

If you are currently not using the new mobile apps, but e.g. the plex web app in a web browser:
your and your friend’s remote clients are forced to use Plex relay because your server is not directly accessible from outside of your home network.
Plex relay is only a makeshift workaround to not be fully without remote access.
The only real solution to the issue is to try and make it accessable.

So for me an easier Fix will be to get a full Plex Pass as i am the owner of the server, I already have a static IP so that shouldn’t be the issue. Pretty sure all my friends use the TV Plex apps and Google Chromecasts. I have been a Plex user for over 5 years and have never had these issues before.

ISPs are putting their existing customers behind a Carrier-Grade NAT all the time.
Which is a common reason for this situation to occur, despite there hasn’t been any change on your side.

If you alrady have a static public IP, I’d verify that the port forwarding in your router is still functional and is pointing to the current IP address of your server machine.
If your server is running Windows, verify that the network connection says “private” and not “public”.

If you haven’t restarted your server machine since April 28th, do it now. (or at least stop and restart Plex server) Then let it sit running for a few hours before trying anything else.
