Removal of Free EPG service - Not Happy

I am just wondering if because of that EPG crap we can apply for cancelling lifetime pass an refund?

Yes I’ve talked to Luke and speechless and the guy with the skull image LOL can’t think of his name right now. They’re awesome they respond so quick. The problem with the transcoder is it’s like an off and on not a smooth transcode throttle like Plex has. So when you have three or four people watching live TV and a couple people watching movies it causes pixelation and disconnections. If you only have one or two devices on as a time you should be fine especially if you’re direct playing.

Just want to add this is terrible. Paid for Plex lifetime for this one reason. only had 10 months of service before the removal of epg.

I’ve just found this out now…couldn’t figure out why Live TV stopped working yesterday…
Does anybody know how we go about even asking for a refund? who to contact?

Hi Dave.

Could please explain what is going on here? All Plex pass subscribers in Australia got an email on the 29th June outlining that the DVR functionality will cease to work come the 1st July 2019 and the only option they will have is to pay for an IceTV subscription for the DVR service to continue to work. In actual fact the DVR functionality stopped working about a week before that. I found some comfort in your post assuming that there had been an error and that, like you describe, Australia will continue to be supported. It is now the 4th July and the functionality has not been restored… WHAT IS GOING ON??

That’s not accurate at all that the email said the only option was IceTV. Australian users have to use an XMLTV EPG service. There are free options available if you don’t want to pay.

You are not accurate either, there is only one free XMLTV EPG option in Australia, and it is neither good nor complete. If you know of others, I’d be very happy to hear, because I have yet to find them.

Just tried out EPG Collector. It collects EPG data via OTA and packages it up into a XML, which you just link to Plex as XML source. Seems to work quite well - use a scheudled task to automate the capture each day and a specific time.
Seems like a decent free alternative to IceTV - which I also would rather not pay for.

EPG Collector for TV Guide (Australia)
Thanks to reddit user votekick for the guide!

Update: Use this version of EPG collector which has a plex tags option, which hopefully fixes Plex not being able to determine shows vs movies and then just marking everything as movies.

Looks very slick, will try this tonight.

As for other free options I’ve tried the Shephard in docker described above, currently trying out Freepg, both work but are missing a couple of channels, this might just be my area (Newcastle) though.

All the options are discussed here, stating mistruths is not helpful.

can you provide an answer as to why you can’t make use of the EPG data that is transmitted over the air with the signal? dvblink does this it works fine? is there a technical reason?

Check this. I have a working OTA XMLTV solution in my Plex (Perth). Took a while but think I may even like it better due to OTA accuracy.

Not Happy with this change. I live in an area at the border between two OTA regions. I have two antennas feeding HDHomeRun Quattro so I get channels from both regions (Birmingham, AL and Huntsville, AL). Plex updated today and now I only can get one region or the other (by changing my zip code), but I cannot get both. I would be happy with OTA EPG but I cannot find that. Plex please provide more flexibility in choosing OTA regions. Plex did not choose the ā€œbestā€ option for my DVR settings.

Incorrect.
Free guide has been removed for Australia.

I’ve been working on a solution for the missing posters in the IceTV guide. I wrote a script to scrape all the tv program logos from the different networks and insert them into the guide. It should work with both shepherd, IceTV and any other xml tv source. It’s not perfect but it’s a lot better than the original guide. I hope to release it in the near future but if you know python and want to give it a try, just send me a message.

Daniel the IceTV CTO is pretty proactive. Have you reached out to him on IceTV forums?

I haven’t posted on the forums but I found similar questions being asked. The response from Daniel was ā€œOur guide team is on top of increasing the amount of actual images, but for some shows they are sadly just not available to us.ā€. I believe it might be a licensing issue with the images. I highly doubt they would not add the data if they could.

I totally agree

As an aside - and not sure if this makes you guys feel any better - but the new guide is a complete disaster in the UK with 25% of channels still providing either wrong or no info after 9 days.
