Remove duplicate entry in continue watching

Using latest beta and in the past you used to be able to remove duplicate entries in the plex home page continue watching row. Say if I have HD library and UHD library pinned, and have something existing in both library, when watching from UHD library, the duplicate item from HD library shows up in continue watching row too. In the past you could use the option to remove from continue watching, and the other item would still remain. Now selecting remove from continue watching removes both item instead of one.

Trying to see if this csn be fixed as still there in latest beta.

This is still an issue in latest beta.

Apologies for the delayed response. I was able to reproduce the issue. I am filing it to be fixed. I will post here once a fix is available.

Thank you. Looking forward to the fix!

Actually, after some further investigation, this is how it is intended to work as they have the same item ID. If you want them to be different you would need to use editions. Otherwise unpinning the library is the only way to not show the duplicates. Sorry for the confusion

There was a previous update some time back where this was working as intended.

If you can point me to a version where it worked that way I would be able to test it out. But this is how it should have always worked due to the way shows are identified, they are identical and any pinned library would appear in continue watching.

I dunno if Editions feature is quite right in this case since it sounds like it’s not different cuts of a film, but different resolutions of the same film.

If it’s a situation where you have a 4K version and a 1080p version, I think the expectation is that Plex admins aren’t separating out their libraries based on format anymore. Plex can manage multiple versions of the same title rather reliably now and I think the recommendation of having them in separate libraries isn’t typical anymore. I’ve seen posts suggest merging those libraries together for more seamless management in other situations.

Plex handles it really well with different resolutions of the same title and autoselecting the right one based on both client setup and remote bandwidth. It doesn’t seem to always work out if HDR\SDR is the only difference but if it’s just 4k vs 1080p vs 720p vs 480p I’ve found it very reliable.

It might be worth looking into merging if it’s two libraries with the same titles. I had mine split up in the past and merged them without too much effort a few years ago.

(those articles should probably cross-link - they refer to the other function but only one cross links)

I think Editions feature works best for different cuts of a film - Director’s Cut and a Theatrical. The only current bug with those is that Editions don’t show up in discover features (if that matters to you - like when you click on an actor to see other films).

I believe the last time it was fixed in version 9.29.0.3217- when I last reported it.

Using editions currently only resolves different editions of the same movie within the same library. If different editions are spread across different libraries, they will still be treated as the same item (When the durations of the two files are the same).

In my testing, even when the same movie exists in different libraries with different editions, they are still treated as the same item (Unless they have independent entries on TMDB or IMDB, or if there are differences in their file durations). Removing one from “Continue Watching” removes both. Currently, the only workaround is to unpin one of the libraries, but this is clearly not ideal.

You mentioned they are treated as the same item because they have the same ID, but they also have different library IDs. Therefore, “Continue Watching” should not only rely on the movie’s ID to identify items but also use both the movie’s ID and the library ID. This way, duplicate issues can be avoided, which would be a more reasonable solution.

Can make a request to see if that aspect of how things are added to CW can be changed, but I can’t make any promises about it.
