This is my fist time using the support community, and after a few hours researching this issue here and via Google I’ve come up empty. Very sorry if this is a duplicate question.
All I want to do is to rename the USB disk on which my PMS library resides. The name will change from “Media BU” to “Media”. Nothing else will change, i.e., all Library folders (Movies, Television, etc.) will remain as is, and the MacOS system disk and Server name will not change. Is there a simple way to do this that won’t require manually updating all of the folders in my Library, and that will preserve my existing meta-data including manual entries?
I’m a bit of a dolt, so a step-by-step would be appreciated, and please yell if what I want to do isn’t clear, or if you need any more info. Thanks a bunch.
From Plex’ point of view this is like moving media to a different location.
There’s a guide on how to approach this without losing any metadata, watch history or ratings.
I had looked at the support document linked in your reply as well as a couple of others. It seems that those steps don’t exactly cover the specific case of simply renaming the PMS disk because in my scenario there is only one disk.
I’m gonna suggest some steps and would appreciate it if you could make corrections as necessary:
In PMS, disable “Empty trash automatically after every scan”
Perform “Refresh Library Metadata” on all Libraries (Movies, Television, etc.)
Quit PMS
Rename the PMS disk
Open PMS and add the new location to all Libraries (Movies, Television, etc.)
Update (ReScan) all Libraries
Check if everything is operational (including meta-data)
Delete the original location from all Libraries
(optional) Re-enable “Empty trash automatically after every scan”
Would that procedure work and preserve all of my meta-data, watched/unwatched status, etc?
That’s pretty much the exact procedure from the support article… except in your use case the “new location” is a renamed version of the original drive…
It’s good practice to perform the Refresh Library Metadata action before doing this procedure. This way Plex should pick up any “left behind” items that might still be matched to a different agent (avoiding Plex confusing them as different items when re-adding them).
