That is true! But I not always add the new file before deleting the old one. Rarely that’s the case actually. I tend to delete them whenever I spot them regardless if I’ve the replacement. That would be another workaround, but it doesn’t work when moving files, Plex is quicker in updating and removing the file from the old folder than updating the new file location.
I just tested this out by replacing an entire series with new files. It’s not exactly what I was expecting as that icon showing missing files shows up everywhere even though the files were replaced. It doesn’t help identify what went missing, especially if you have multiple versions of the same thing. It also refreshes the meta, which if I had customized I wonder if it would have survived.
I also agree, that Plex seems to favor the removal of an item and then the addition of a replacement and seems to just follow the same procedure every time. A movie or show entry in the DB is coupled to the files existence, which makes sense… but when it comes to changes and library file maintenance it doesn’t.
I also notice that collections have issues when this removal addition process happens… it also doesn’t help that some collections I have were older, before Plex (or TMDB) decided collections are only for movie sequels.
