Renaming files

Where in the Plex user interface are you looking at file and folder names?

mp4 and others.
In libraby click on the 3 dots in the movies portrait and Get Info

And you are always seeing the old (and invalid?) folder path in there, even if you can play the item?
Or do you see two folder paths?

I removed all the files from the movies folder and tried scanning but nothing changes. So I guess scanning just isn’t working now. Included log

I moved the movies away from the plex movie folder. did a new rename with filebot and they appreared correct on Plex with proper names. I then did empty trash and update metadata and plex renamed them to the old names with estra stuff on them again. I don’t know where it’s even getting them because those folders are gone

Don’t do that. A completely empty folder is considered as “temporarily unavailable” by Plex, so the attempt doesn’t have the desired effect. You need to leave at least one file in it. (Even a small .txt file will do.)

I see the correct path in Get Info, old one on the UI

I see the correct path in Get Info, old one on the UI

Sorry, I don’t know what this means. Are these two different things?

Get Info is a behind the 3-dot menu if you click on movies portrait.

And now my whole Movies folder is empty and I lost all my movies it seems. Would be nice to know how that happened because I didn’t delete anything. Log Plex Media Server Logs_2021-03-31_15-06-07.zip (4.1 MB)

This I know, but what is “old one on the UI” supposed to mean?

Are you talking about folders on your media storage or about the Movie Library in Plex?
And when you say “now”, what did you do beforehand?

On my media storage. Scanned, emptied trash and updated metadata

Curious. Are you looking at the mount point with a file explorer? i.e. not from inside the Plex user interface?
Could it be that the automounter has silently unmounted the hard drive?

File explorer. Drive is mounted, only the Movies folder was emptied

What exactly did you do, when you did this?

Did you “select” all items inside of the Plex library and clicked on “Delete”?!!!
Because this will delete your actual media files.

Movies are back after a reboot. Properties actually showed the folder had files but when opening the fodler it said folder empty. odd

I’m afraid I am not able to help you further. I can’t tell you how to work around such an erratically operating system behaviour (particularly when I am not using it myself).

In your logs Plex Media Scanner.1.log I see

Mar 31, 2021 15:02:49.038 [0x7efd22c3d780] DEBUG - Performing a scan with 'Plex Movie Scanner' (language: en virtual: 0).

You can see plex still sees /media/joni/Toshiba/Movies. I also see references to /media/Toshiba/Movies so there is still something funky with your mounts and how they are configured with plex.

I have it scanning for both still.

Changing the Title is locked:

I can unlock it manually there but where is the global setting to open locking on all files?

edit: or does that icon mean unlocked? Either way I think I’m just gonna manually change the Titles, it’s only about 50 movies.

As you can see Info has the correct names:

There are several issues at play here.

Step 1

Don’t do that. Decide on one and remove the other from your library.

Step 2

Regarding the movie title: definitely caused by embedded meta tags.
Do this: Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie (Legacy)
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata of the affected items.

If your movie library already uses the new “Plex Movie” agent, do this instead:
Edit your movie library
go to the ‘Advanced’ tab
clear the check mark out of “Prefer local metadata”

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata of the affected items.

So those titles come from the fact the metadata is embedded in the mp4 file which you downloaded

You have a couple of options, 1) manually edit them, the icon will turn orange when you edit to lock it (I’d not recommend that btw), 2) scrub the mp4 files themselves and remove the metadata (use something like easytag) or 3) turn off the Prefer local metadata under the advanced settings on the library, then unmatch and rematch the movie to get it to force an update.

HOWEVER, I cannot stress this enough – the way you are mounting is just going to keep causing you problems. You need to fix that and don’t be scanning both. Its just going to continue to cause you headaches.
