Renaming Solutions

I have many of these 2 files named
501. The Fire Has Been Set! The Gray Terminal in Crisis! - Part 1.mp4
501. The Fire Has Been Set! The Gray Terminal in Crisis! - Part 2.mp4

502 and so on

How do I get Plex to see both of them? it only shows Part 1

The file names of video files must NOT end in any of these words:

    cdX
    discX
    diskX
    dvdX
    partX
    ptX

(where X is any number)
Otherwise Plex will try to “stack” same-named files and append the content of e.g. ...-part2 to ...part1

For movies, the most obvious way to avoid that is to add a release (year) afterwards, as this is recommended anyway.

Using roman numerals instead of arabic ones is another.

P.S. Is this a movie or a tv show episode?

These are TV Shows, all episodes 499 down to 001 are ok as they are single files
I don’t want to join the files, I could rename
501. The Fire Has Been Set! The Gray Terminal in Crisis! - Part 1.mp4 to S15E501
501. The Fire Has Been Set! The Gray Terminal in Crisis! - Part 2.mp4 to S15E502
It is part of Season 15, hence the S15
No worry about the metadata as there are none
Name of TV Show is One Piece

You could also use letters instead of numbers for the parts. It’s the easiest and smallest change and retains the episode info.

`Can you please give me an example ?

501. The Fire Has Been Set! The Gray Terminal in Crisis! - Part A.mp4
501. The Fire Has Been Set! The Gray Terminal in Crisis! - Part B.mp4

I don’t believe there is a part 1 and 2. Plex is doing what it’s suppose to do by combining those episodes

If you named your shows according to the tvdb or tmdb it would pull all the correct metadata

i.e. One Piece.S14E020.The Flames Are Lit - The Gray Terminal`s Crisis

You might want to try a renaming tool
Rename My TV Series 2

Question Otto. I was under the impression the continue watching is triggered by release date and not the s01e01 format

If there’s no metadata for any episodes, how does it know what episode is next in line?

This thread is not about CW.
Of course it falls back to the season and episode numbers if there is no Original Available date.

TheTVDB says that episode is S14E20 in “Season” view, and 501 in “Continual” view. It’s a shame it’s been split into two files.

Doesn’t Plex handle “Part 1 and Part 2” separate TV Show files, combining them together as they are supposed to be?

If you change it to S15E01 and S15E02, Plex will likely think that those are the real S15E1 and 2, which would be bad.

Otto’s suggestion did the trick rename Part 1 and Part 2 to Part A and Part B
Tested it and half way trough Part A it stopped and starting playing Part B
Perfect!!!
Thanks O

I would have expected that this is what should not happen.
But hey, I take it if you are happy with it!

What should not happen?

That the two files get automatically linked.

Confused!! you are telling me I have just pulled a rabbit out of a hat and it wasn’t meant to happen?
Or did we just create a new feature in Plex

I guess the question is why the second file started to play.
Was it because it was numbered to be the next episode
or was it because Plex linked the two files to be played as one and the same episode?

I would have expected the former to work, but not the latter.

(The former will work on all Plex client types,
the latter may have some issues on some client types.)

Before the renaming when playing 501 the length of the show showed 11mins, so I guess it was playing Part 1.
After the renaming when playing 501 the length of the show shows 22mins and getting the skip intro
I have a Apple TV 4, I’ve downloaded these shows for my daughter who is using a PS5 and if it down work on that, I’m going to get it in both ears.

If you want to avoid any trouble with the female parts of the family, I’d rather go for fixing the issue at the source and concatenate the both files. [HowTo]: joining multi-part movies files with MKVtoolnix GUI

Thanks O, I think this should be the correct way to view multiple files as one show in Plex
