File naming multiple parts - same episode

Adding tv shows with multi-part episodes.
Most episodes have 4 parts (one has 12parts)

shows are showing up properly in the episodes view but a few will not play back in correct order.
It will playback e01p01 then e01p04 then e01p02 then e01p03

I have the files named the same, except for the episode number and name.
Ex.
Show name - s01e01p01 - episode name - part 1
Show name - s01e01p02 - episode name - part 2
Show name - s01e01p03 - episode name - part 3
And so on

How can I reorder the files to play back in correctly

See Episodes Split Across Multiple Files section:

/TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Split_Name.ext

I recently had this issue and it was related to the order they had been added to Plex…

By renaming files, I was able to have them added in the correct order visible in ‘Get Info’ for that episode

As mentioned in the documentation, Plex supports a maximum of eight parts.

Consider joining the parts together. Not all Plex clients play nice with movies/shows split across multiple files. Joining the files is easy with MKVToolNix. It can take MKV & MP4 as input. The output is a MKV file. See the How To document:

I want to second that recommendation.

I also want to ask why a single episode is split into 12 parts, just for my own curiosity. Plenty of TV series/seasons aren’t that long!

That’s the way it was aired on tv and is on dvd that way. It was one of the doctor who series back in 1965-66
1 episode … 12 parts (most have 4) … individually named episodes

Make sure you are listing the episodes correctly. Pretty sure those are individual episodes, not one episode with 4 or 12 parts.

Plex matches TV episodes based on thetvdb.com.

Check the listing for Doctor Who Season 3: https://thetvdb.com/series/doctor-who/seasons/official/3

Although it shows (1)…(4) or (1)…(12) beside some episodes, they all have individual episode numbers, names, and air dates.
