Replacing drive in a Synology DS220j. Need to backup and restore Plex settings, etc

I’m going to be replacing one of the drives in my DS220j with a larger one in a JBOD system, so I will be starting from scratch. Media is in 3 shared folders, Mjusic, Video, Photos that will be restored from an external USB Drive. What’s the easiest way to restore PMS to it’s latest current state (settings, metadata, etc)?

TY

As I mentioned, it’s a JBOD system, so I will have to start from scratch when replacing a drive. Meaning creating the storage pool again and then copying all my data back to the Server. You can’t just replace a drive, apparently, in a JBOD system

This is according to Synology. You can’t just replace a drive. I’m assuming it spans across the disks

Hi,

Thank you for reaching Synology Support. I understand that you wanted to replace a disk in your JBOD system. Unfortunately that is not possible with no RAID setup on your NAS. The only way is to backup your data on an external device and start from scratch in setting up.

How do I expand storage pool or volume capacity? | Synology Inc.

JBOD is not listed as a type that allows for simply replacing a drive with a larger one

You’re using SHR. I’m using JBOD

I don’t understand what you just said. That is JBOD. Regardless, I’m not going to keep going back and forth on it. The bottom line is I know I have to backup data and start from scratch. It’s what I said from the beginning. Now, my question again is, what do I do about PMS?

not exactly. I’m backing up and then restoring all shared folders, which includes one named PLEX, but will that restore all the metadata the way it is? All the corrections to the movie and music information, the playlists, and everything?

Well, I’m only backing up the shared folders, and the settings for the apps Hyper Backup allows, which doen’t include PMS. Is everything in that shared folder? Will the new installation of PMS pick up everything automatically?

Thank you

So, it turns out most of those steps were unnecessary. Using Synology’s built-in Backup program, Hyper Backup seems to do everything needed. Just backup the entire server drives and then restore it after, everything works as normal, including all the apps.

Can I squeeze into this thread and ask a question please?

I’m in a similar, but slightly different situation:

I have 4 drives in my DS918+ configured with SHR and 2-drive fault tolerance, and I’m running out of drive space.

I had contemplated getting a Synology DX517 expansion unit as one option, or even simply replacing the 4 existing drives with larger drives, but a friend suggested I simply backup the whole server, and reconfigure my existing drives to RAID 5 and restoring the backup. He felt this would give me the additional drive space I need without replacing any drives or buying extra equipment.

Will this work? I mean, is it possible? He felt it would give me another 5-7 TB of available space. But, is it really that easy? Just backup, change drive configuration to RAID 5, and then restore? I am really concerned about losing my PLEX configuration, settings, metadata, and viewstates.

What am I missing?

I agree with you on getting the DX517, but I’m on a budget right now, so will likely buy it in early summer. In the meantime, I gotta get this sorted.

I got a Synology C2 trial… any idea how long you think it will take to backup 11.2 TB at 1GB upload speed? I don’t have any other physical drive to do the backup on.
