REQUEST: 4K Playback not Support on New Sony BRAVIA Firmware

Server Version#: 1.25.5.5492
Player Version#: 8.29.1.30697
Smart TV Model: Sony BRAVIA KD-65X750H (AndroidTV)
TV Firmware: 60424000

I’m fairly certain that the latest firmware for Sony BRAVIA TVs has made 4K playback impossible on the Plex app. The issue for my TV started around the time Sony released the 60424000 firmware update, and ever since, my Plex app will not DirectPlay 4K video on my TV anymore. It always transcodes it down to 1080p now. The issue isn’t present with any other devices. Plex Media Player on various computers, my phone, even a friend’s LG TV can all DirectPlay the 4K videos. I’ve tested rolling back my Plex app version. Then I found out the last firmware update was about the same time I began having this issue with 4K video playback, which was 1/17/22. It’s impossible to rollback the firmware, so I’m pleading for a fix from the Plex team. :pray:t5:

Any chance there are subtitles or unsupported audio streams in what you are playing? The firmware update had to do with receiver channels, nothing mentioned on smart functions. If you look at the plex dash app while its playing, does it tell you why it is transcoding?

The reason for transcoding is “4K is not supported on this device.”, which doesn’t make sense cause it is a 4K TV and use to DirectPlay 4K just fine. I’ve checked the audio codecs, and while there are some videos with unsupported audio that needs to be transcoded, most are supported and will DirectPlay while the video is always transcoded. I’ve tested converting whole movies to different codecs and changing containers trying to troubleshoot this.
