So can Plex for anything handle 4K or is it only for YouTube videos and 2005 movies?

I have always had problems with Plex. I keep paying it for more than 5 years monthly just out of habit, but I’m really done.

I have never had seamless experience with this service, nor is there an existing technical support.
I had a Chromecast and besides 720p low bitrate videos it never worked with any files.

Now I have an Sony Bravia Android TV with wired 1000mbps connection and Plex still can’t handle anything. 4K files just stutter like crazy - any 4K files, regarldess of codec. Some 1080p files just die with “Can’t play right now” or other ridicolous error messages.

We’re giving up on this service as of today and the main reason is retarded technical support and lack of any interest of the Plex Team towards clients.

Yeah well… i have a sony bravia that stutters any 4k bd rip. Same problem for high bitrate 1080p rips… (30mbit+)
wifi or wired makes no difference. plex, kodi or vlc makes no difference.
So i got a shield tv and 4k bd rips play perfectly except for the forced transcoding when using subtitles bs…

Well Netflix or HBO or whatever plays 4K HDR even on wi-fi without any problems whatsoever. Plex can’t literally handle anything and behaves like a free beta.

Dude… netflix 4k caps out at 16mbit and same for HBO… some 1080p bly rays are up to 40mbit+ and most 4k bly ray are 50mbit+
Some of the bravis models just dont have the processing power to decode high bitrate content.

The same file plays fine via USB drive on the TV.
So Shield TV is the solution?

A shield and appropriate 4K receiver.

I’m pretty sure most TVs still only have 100Mbps ethernet, including Sony models. My Sony TV handles lower bitrate 4K files fine, but struggles with high bitrate, due to its 100Mbps ethernet. Otherwise, been working well on a Shield for the last 3 years :man_shrugging:
