I have got a Steam Deck and it has quickly become my “portable entertainment device.” The one thing it is missing is Plex. It seems like the Plex Desktop (which works well on Ubuntu) would also work well on the deck. This would allow for folks to watch content on the deck itself, as well as connect it to the TV in a hotel or other venue and enjoy Plex.
Plex Desktop and HTPC are published on Flathub now, so they are available in the Discover app that you can run in desktop mode on the steam deck. Both seemed to work when I tried them, but the HTPC app is likely more suitable for the Deck. But this is currently not a supported platform.
Users reported varying levels of success, likely stemming from the fact that some people run it in desktop mode, others run it under Gamescope.
Getting HTPC on the Steam store proper is a different story. I’ve briefly looked into it and it requires a pretty involved deployment process. There is no decision so far if this is something we will pursue in the future.
Personally speaking I have not run my Deck in Desktop mode, it’s not a desktop. A cool dev-y feature Valve put in, but not the way I use my device. I have no numbers to support it, but I imagine most folks don’t know that the desktop mode even exists. So a good way to develop and test, but I don’t think it is a final solution for this request.
Sad to hear that getting it in the Steam store would be difficult. I was hoping that was an easier solution. But yes, that would be the best for how I was thinking about it.
Seeing from the link that @tom80H posted, clearly I’m not the only one thinking about how cool it would be. Consider this a +1 for putting this issue on the backlog.
+1 for a native Steam app. I’m trying to get Plex desktop to work on the Steam Deck, and so far it’s a painful process.
That said, I didn’t have nearly as much trouble getting the HTPC client working. If you would support downloads on that platform, it would remove the problem I’m trying to solve.
The Plex app available via the Discover App running from Steam Deck in desktop mode is 100% broken. It has been for months and it appears no one at Plex cares enough to fix this issue. The issue is that the login / sign up buttons do NOTHING when pressed. Making the app useless on the Steam Deck. With hundreds of people complaining about this issue, you would think that Plex would fix this problem.
To be clear, the Steam Deck is not a supported platform at the moment. If it works for someone, that’s great, but we are not devoting any resources to it at the moment. FWIW, the buttons not working is likely due to the fact that you are running it in gamescope. You can select a community button mapping to make it work. If you are running Plex Desktop in gamescope, it won’t be able to login because it needs to start a browser. You can use Plex HTPC instead to login via a link code.
